Week of March 14-18

Hi everyone,

Today we are going to talk about Coming of Age ceremonies.

Jonas is going through the change from being a boy to being a man. He participates in a special ceremony to honor that event. In English we call this "Coming of Age".
  1. In MS Word, write a description of this kind of ceremony in your native country. What is it called, what do you do, how do you dress, is there a party, what is done? Be detailed and specific.
  2. Please find websites that show how this ceremony is practiced in your native country. Paste in links to these websites.
  3. Read 3 other students' posts and write about what you learned from each one.
  4. How are the ceremonies similar and different?

Here is my example:

I am Jewish and in my religion, when a child turns 13, he or she is given a bar mitzvah (boy) or a bat mitzvah (girl). This ceremony first takes place in a synagogue which is a house of worship for the Jewish people. During the ceremony, the boy or girl reads from the Jewish Bible, called the Torah, in Hebrew. He or she sings songs and is joined by members of his or her family. Candles are lit, prayers are read, songs are sung, and many people are there to watch and participate. After the religious ceremony, there is a big party with food, dancing and more celebrating. It is very exciting and fun.

Here are links to websites with information about the ceremony:

My religion is Hindu and in my religion and in my religion, boys between 8 and 12 celebrate the ceremony named “Bartabanda”. In this ceremony they learn the traditional law, rites and rituals. In my country it is also considered as the beginning of manhood .They should also put on sacred thread and also save their head for their purification which also shows that a boy did “Bartamandha”. The boy is provided with mantra on this day which should be used twice a day before meal. Especially the child who is going to have Bartamandha is dressed in white or orange dress. This ceremony also varies from religion to religion. In some of the caste, a boy should carry bow and arrow and also they have to walk around whole city asking for rice and tika with their neighbor which is also known as “Dakshina”. Some people consider this ceremony as “License to marriage”.

  2. In Chinese culture, there is a cerebration which named “ceremony of adults”. This cerebration usually for 11 grades students who are 18 or almost 18 years old. At that day, all 11 grades ‘ students must wear their school uniform and come to school on time. School principal will announce all school students to cheer with them. 11 grade students will swear follow the principal’s said. The principal cheer them to do more useful things for the society. This cerebration usually spent half hour and happened in the playground. Most students who are 11 grades enjoy it. Some school will have a performance to cerebrate.

  3. In Japan, “Coming of Age” is “Seijin no HI”. When Japanese who are 20 years old become adults, Japanese peoples open “Seijin Shiki” which is a ceremony. In the ceremony the Japans men wear “Genpuku” or ”Hekoiwai”. The Japanese Women wear “Mogi”. Many Japanese people celebrate the Japanese each other.

  7. 1.In our culture (Bangladesh) there is no ceremony to be adult. But after 18 years old, we can vote for our country. Before 18 years old, we can’t vote. And we can’t get driving license. In our country, after 18 years old, a boy or a girl is counted as an adult and can get married. But there is nothing like a ceremony. It’s just like a usual birthday party.

Ans : 1. The ceremony for men was called capping ceremony, meaning doing a hair in a bun or coil and wearing a cap. Usually it was held in February in an ancestral temple and the date was chosen by the person to be capped by divination. Three days before the ceremony, an honored guest would be selected to perform the rite. And during the ceremony, the participants- the host (in most cases, the father of the person to be capped), the honored guest and the person to be capped were required to wear ceremonial attires. The receiver was first capped with an inner cap, then a cap, followed by a scarf. After these three steps, his hair was combed into a bun, suggesting the beginning of adulthood. The ceremony for women was called the hair-pinning ceremony, which means gathering hair into a knot and using a hairpin to hold it. It was held after a woman’s engagement and before her wedding, when the woman turned 20 at the latest. The procedures were almost the same as those of a capping ceremony, with slight differences. For instance, the participants were almost women, and the venue of the ceremony was usually inside a main room or an inner chamber. Traditionally, after the rites, the honored guest would deliver a congratulatory speech to the capped person. The general idea of the speech is followed: from now on, you are granted adult attire. It is time for you to stop behaving like a child and to act as an adult. Keep in mind to maintain dignity and achieve moral excellence. Wish you a long life and a successful career. Then the capped person would perform a formal bow to his mother. Finally, a new name would be given by the honored guest. The whole ceremony was over.

This ceremony takes place in their home the baby is raised and taught the Islamic rulings and knowing Allah and the prophets. Their parents try to make him get used to perform prayers and other Muslim pillars.

In my native country, there is no party when a child become 18 but we can go to many places that we can’t go before we are 18 such like a bar. Maybe some teenagers will celebrate together without their parents’ monitor. Most of the ceremony of Chinese is disappeared now. They were popular in the period between Han and Ming.

  18. I am a Muslims and in my religion.when a child turn in to 12 they will get saluar payjama(girl dress) and panjabe (boy dress). After 12 the girls will not going to muszed again to learn Qur’an which is religion’s book. So I want to tell us my situation about turning 12. After I turning 12 I was very dumfounded and very excited because after turning 12 I can’t wear my regular dress that I wear before . in every girls when they turned 12 they have to wear long dress and scarf to cover their head .but I was very happy to getting gift from my family’s every person even my friend. Also we have a lot of party. But the sad news is I will not meet again to my before class met if they wear not turned 12 with me. I can met with them if I see them in outside but I can’t met then in school. After turned 12 all Muslim’s girls have to read the Qur’an every morning and pray for god. but also we have some rule that we have to follow that like after 12 the girls can’t talk with a boy who they don’t know, can’t go outside whenever they want ,they can’t go outside at 12 o’clock AM and PM because the ghost might be crush ,also we can’t go outside without long clothes and without cover the head. But the happy news is we make decision in our family, we can have little freedom about going class met home’s. In 12 ceremonies we have a party with lot of food and sweet pita that we have to make it. Also we can wear share (like a one kind of weeding clothes) in our class met or sister’s wedding. So it was very fun and also we have to follow some good rule and bad rule. Those are the picture of dress that we can wear after 12. In cover the head that dess we wear everyday like that are our regular dress.

  19. In many countries, they have a great party for the teenagers that reach certain ages. Now, I will introduce the corresponding ceremony of my native country, China. It’s called “the ceremony for adults”. To take part in the ceremony, students dress their uniforms very neatly and clearly. For girls, they wear a purely white T-shirts with ties and tartan skirts that reach their knees or simple trousers. For boys, they wear T-shirts and trousers. This party means that all the teenagers finish their study of high schools and become adults. During the party, the teachers and the leaders of schools have their speeches about the wishes to this new adults, and students will swear oaths to announce their maturity. Also, some students perform onstage that is prepared early.

And they’ve to serve the food for everyone in that house. They also stay in baby’s house 1 day. They gossip with everyone happily and also have a meeting with everyone about the baby’s name. The parents make the party in a club or in the house with all the family and friends. The girl has a court with 15 girls and 15 boys. I am Egyptian and my religion is Islam. My culture and my religion share many traditions. In my religion, when a girl reaches puberty, she cannot wear short dresses or skirts anymore. Girls also should wear a scarf (veil) to cover their hair; after they reach puberty. In my culture, a boy or a girl cannot leave their parents’ until they get married and the father is responsible for his children until they graduate and get a job. People in my age cannot get deriving license until they turn 18. Minors are not responsible for their inheritance until they turn 21.

My religion is ISLAM. In our religion when a child is born their parents has to give them a name. And for that name they call their relatives to come to their house. And most of the parents try to give name from the holy book QURAN. And also when a child turns 7 they must go to prayer in the mosque. Or else our god will be angry. So many of the parents try to send their child to the mosque when they are 7.

  47. I am Christian and from Burma. In my religion, when we born, we have to make a celebration after 7 days. That is called Baptism. A child has got Baptism name by a priest with his/her God-father and God-mother. God father and mother are same like the parents. They must have responsible for a child. When we are adult , there is no ceremony except birthday and marriage.

  49. In my country we celebrate the quinceanera party. All the girls celebrate this party when they become 15. It represents that they are not a child anymore, they are now a woman. The girls wear a big and pink dress, and during the party they dance with their fathers a vals. The girls invite all their family and friends and some of them performance a nice choreography, using certain clothes. The girl’s family prepare a huge banquet, and a really big pink cake. All the accessories in the party are pink. This party is important in my country, all the girls dream about it when they are close to become 15.

  53. 1. In MS Word, write a description of this kind of ceremony in your native country. What is it called, what do you do, how do you dress, is there a party, what is done? Be detailed and specific.

I am from India and in my religion the famous celebration is when someone get marriage then there is a big party. This ceremony takes place in a big restaurant. We celebrate it nicely and greatly. We invite our all relatives and friends in that party. We serve a lot off food to everyone there in the restaurant. We play music very loud and we dance a lot. In the afternoon of the wedding day we have to go to our Sikh temple to pray after that the wedding girl have to go with her husband to his home. We wear very heavy and beautiful dresses on the wedding day. The wedding girl wears heavier dress then others. We all wear Indian dresses. It ends in the night then everybody goes to their homes and the girl goes with her husband in her in-law home. It has been a big party in India I know.
    2. Please find websites that show how this ceremony is practiced in your native country. Paste in links to these websites.

  55. I am Dominican and in my country, when a girl turns fifteen, she has a QUINCEAÑERO. The party takes place in a beautiful place, (the girl decides where); sometimes in hotels, houses, halls. Parents invite all the family members and friends. The girl wears a very nice, long and elegant dress; which almost always is pink. The girl has to dance a Vals with her father; also he has to take out her shoes and change it into high heels. The girl has a section of picture (alone, with the family, and her friends). Her friends make a dance choreography as a surprise for the celebrated. There are a lot of foods there and a big and beautiful cake. When the girl turns 15 , it means that she turn to be a woman. Also, we call the ceremony “The fifteen springs”.

  76. In China, there is not everybody celebrate of being a adult. People in my town have our own way to celebrate of being a adult, called “fenpeny”, means to be independent. In that day ,we gather all the children who is 18 years old (in china we count age as year, not the birthday) and their parents of our town ,then we have the dinner together ,during the dinner ,everybody turn to say “thank you “ to their parents, and the parents will give their child a gift.

I'm muslim like you, and in Islam the parents have to start teaching their childrens (boys or girls) our religion's teachings when they are kids. Once the childrens turn 10, their parents will punish them for leaving any prayer. When girls reach puberty, they should cover their hair.

I’m Ecuadorian and in my country we celebrate something that is called the Quinceañera party. Only the girls are the ones who celebrate this party when they become 15. The celebration marks the transition from girl to woman's quinceañera. Serves as a way to recognize the girl in question has reached maturity. The girls wear a big and pink dress; during this party the girl dances with his gentleman and his father too, some of the girl’s friend performance a nice choreography for guests. The girl invites some of her family and friends, the girl’s family prepare a huge banquet, and a really big cake. Almost all the accessories are pink.

    1. The ceremony for men was called the capping ceremony, which means doing hair in a bun or coil and wearing a cap. In ancient times, the capping ceremony was held in February in an ancestral temple and the date was chosen by the person to be capped by divination. Three days before the ceremony, he would select an honored guest to perform the rite as well as a capping assistant to help out. During the ceremony, the host, honored guest and the person to be capped were supposed to wear ceremonial attires. The man was first capped with an inner cap, followed by a cap and a scarf. After the three steps, the mans hair was combed into a bun, which suggested the beginning of adulthood.
