Week of January 16, Letters to James McBride

Hi everyone,


Write a letter to James McBride. This is a formal letter, and it should be typed.  Please use the format below.  I will mail the letters to him and maybe he will write us back!  In your letter, please do the following:

Begin with a formal greeting, “Dear Mr. McBride”

Paragraph 1:    Introduce yourself, name, country of origin, grade in school, how long you’ve been in the US, and why you’re writing to him (in my ESL class, we just finished your memoir, The Color of Water)

Paragraph 2:    Tell him what the book meant to you. Tell him what you enjoyed about it and why, how it made you feel and why, and any text to self connections you made as you read. Be specific.  Refer to actual quotes from the memoir (go back to your reading logs to do this, and look at your double entry journals).

Paragraph 3:    Ask him questions you have about the book. Make sure you are respectful and only ask appropriate questions.

Then thank him for reading your letter and writing the memoir.  

Close with “Sincerely” and then print your name and sign the letter.

Dear Mr. McBride,

My students and I wanted to write and thank you for your incredible memoir, The Color of Water.  We thoroughly enjoyed reading it together, experiencing your history and your mother’s history, as told by you with such humor, warmth and love.

My students are all new immigrants, from over 50 different countries, and they too have had no easy childhood. They easily identify with the pain you experienced as you learned about your mother’s past.  Many of them were separated from their parents at a young age, and are only now meeting them, here in a new country, as if for the first time.  Also, many of them experience great discrimination due to their document status, race, language abilities, accents, cultural differences, and xenophobia.

I have taught your memoir many times over the years, and every time, it’s as if I’m reading it for the first time. My daughter, who is now eight, is also from parents of different races and religions (I’m Jewish and my husband is West Indian). I easily identify with your story, and can’t wait for the day when she is old enough to read it.

Please enjoy my students’ letters and thank you again for your work.

    What did you enjoy about class this marking period? Why? Please refer to specific activities, projects, workshops, etc. I enjoyed reading stories, because they were interesting as well.
    What didn't you enjoy and why? Please be specific. I didn’t like to do homework assignment that was i supposed to do.
    Were there any activities/projects/topics that we didn't cover that you want us to cover? Which ones? I think i’m ok, because i read all of them.
    What can I do to make the class better for you (aside from no homework J )? Please be specific. we might want to study some new vocabulary and regents prep.
    Has your English improved since the class began? If yes, how? If no, why not? Please think carefully about this. I think i’ve improve myself, because things that i’m doing now its review for me.
    When and where do you usually do your homework? I like to do homework at night when its quiet, And i do my homework in bedroom.
    Do you find it difficult to do your homework? Why? No, because its seems easy to me. Also i clearly understand those assignment so i didn’t have to face in difficulties.
    How much time do you spend looking at your class notes each week? its about 3-4 hours.
    What can you do to improve your class participation? I need to communicate more.
    How do you study for tests and quizzes? i just review the class notes.
    Do you feel that the grade you are getting right now is the best you can do? Why? No, i think i can do better than this as well.
    What strategies will you use to get a better grade next marking period? i need to focus more on homework staff and class work too.
    What advice can you give to your classmates to make their experience in this class more meaningful? Study over and over. Ask teacher when you got stuck on anything.

    Dave.
    "Shucks, a man oughta hava little gun aftah he done worked hard all day," muses Dave, the protagonist of Richard Wright's short story "The Man Who Was Almost a Man." A man ought to have a little gun. Throughout the story, Dave, who is almost but not quite a man, never wavers in this conviction that a gun will make the difference and signal the manhood to which he aspires.
    In this sense, Dave provides an interpretation of the significance of the gun, the story's central literary symbol. Armed with a gun, Dave believes that he will no longer be scared. He will be powerful and respected.

    Mom.
    She is very pleasant person who always loves her son Dave. She give whatever her son dave’s need. Onday he decided to buy a gun because, He felt like his masculine and no longer of being a teenager. So, he asked mom for money to buy it. by the time his mom said ” yuh bring it stright back t me, yuh hear.” But dave didn’t give it to his mom. he kept it for himself.

    Father.
    Daves father is very hot-tempered “ Yuh wan me t take a tree n beet yuh till yuh talk!”. his father doesn’t want him to be bad. He wants dave to tell the truth.

    In story “The One Who Watches” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. This is an memoir which demonstrate that while you’r not getting any support from your family you might do things as hazardous. For example, In story Doris says that Yolanda has "problems that make her act crazy.” This means Yolanda is the one who faces in lot of obstacles,and she is the one who needs to take care of herself no matter how she would react. According to quote my opinion is that, Yolanda is the one who’s bossy and irresponsible, Because she had no one to take care of her.





    In story “The One Who Watches” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. In this story Doris is the one who’s following her friend Yolanda. Doris friend Yolanda is very sophisticated person. She envy people and she likes to trail things on while they go to shopping. But when they go to store people start watching them within negative expression.This is because they both has gone to the store before as much enthusiasm and Yolanda had stole something.
