Today we are going to do several things on our blog:
1. Please visit these websites to see a map of the settings in Night and a timeline of the events in Night:
a. Google map of settings
b. US Holocaust museum timeline of Elie Wiesel's life
As you go to these websites, please use the blog note sheet to take notes. Then post your answers below in our comments section.
After you do this, complete this assignment:
Quote Sandwiches about Characters
You will be creating three quote sandwiches,
Eliezer
Eliezer's father (Shlomo)
Madame Schachter
Write one full paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Eliezer is ________________ because __________." This should be about 2-3 sentences long.
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from the story that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character. Again about 2-3 sentences long. Please type your quote sandwiches and print them. If you can't print because you are using a laptop, write them on a piece of paper.
III. My
most precious possessions:
The Nazis permit Elie and his family to take
only their most precious possessions or what they can carry to the ghetto. When
the Nazis evacuate the Jewish families from the ghettos and force them to board
the cattle cars for work camps, they again tell them to take only what they can
carry.
Directions: If you were in a situation where you were forced to suddenly
leave your home and were told only to bring those items you could carry to the
ghetto, what would you bring? Make a list of the items you would bring, but
remember they must be items you can carry with you.
Do this work on your blog worksheet, and then post them to our comments below.
Finally read the posts of your classmates and write responses to at least three of them telling them:
1. What did you like about their post?
2. What did you learn from them?

ReplyDeleteQuote Sandwiches:
ReplyDelete1. Eliezer- Eliezer is afraid of the crematorium because he sees a lot of people being burned alive. The word "people" here mostly means children or babies. He is very terrified as he is a child himself, and he doesn't want to die slowly in the searing flame. We can see this in the quote on page 33, "My forehead was covered with cold sweat..... I could not believe that human beings were being burned in our times..... I'll run into the electrified barbed wire. That would be easier than a slow death in the flames." This quote shows us that Eliezer doesn't want to die in the blistering flame. This concludes that he is afraid of the crematorium.
2. Eliezer's father- Mr. Shlomo is very concerned for his son. He tries anything and everything to conceal his feelings for his son. However, deep down, he really cares for his son, and doesn't want him to die. We can see this connection in the quote on page 33, "His voice was terribly sad. I understood that he did not wish to see what they would do to me. He did not wish to see his only son go up in the flames." This quote shows us that his father cares for him a lot and doesn't want his son to die.
3. Maame Schacter- Madame Schacter is traumatized for being isolated from her family members. her heart is so shattered that she is unable to visualize reality. She became very depressed and started acting crazy. We can see this in the quote on page 24, " Mrs. Schacter lost her mind. On the first day of the journey, she had already begun to moan...... Later, her sobs and screams became hysterical." This shows that by being isolated from her family, she no longer sees the world like others. Her shattered heart sustained her with great trauma.
My most precious possessions:
1. Sketch pad and colors.
2. Food
3. Mobile, charger and headphones
4. Quarters and money inside my shoes.
5. Video games
If I was forced to leave my house, with the permission of carrying five items, I would choose the following: First of all, I will take my sketch pad and colors. This will keep me away from being bored, and help me to pass my time. Second, I would take food. I didn't refer to carrying a bundle of food all the way. I meant supplies that will make me last longer. Third, I would take mobile, chargers, and headphones. I MUST carry any sort of technology for me to survive. These have similar uses as the first one. Next, I would carry some quarters and money so that I can survive with them. Afterall, money is the solution to every problem. If I ever need to get out of the ghetto and live somewhere else, those money will help me. Finally, I would take my video games to pass my time.

i)
ReplyDeleteThree things I’ve learned from the Google Map:
• Elie Wiesel had to move far away from his hometown, Sighet, Transylvania.
• Buchenwald concentration camp was situated in Germany.
• Glewitz concentration camp, Birkenau concentration camp and Buna
concentration camps were close to each other.
Three things I’ve learned from the USH MM timeline:
• The Jewish annihilation process began right after Hitler was appointed as the
chancellor of Germany.
• Winston Churchill became British Prime Minister in 1940.
• Elie Wiesel went to Jersusalem for the first time in 1949.
ii)
1. Eliezer:
Eliezer is a boy who was devoted to his father because when his mother and sisters were forced to be separated from his father, he couldn't let his father go alone. We can see this in the quote on page 29, ''I kept on walking, my father holding my hand.'' This quote conveys us that Eliezer was much weaker on his father than his mother, he decided to stay with his father in a very dangerous short period of time.
2. Elier's father (Sholmo):
Eliezer's father is a worried father who wasn't really mentally prepared to see his son getting tortured. We can see that in the quote on page 33, ''what a shame, a shame that you didn't go with your mother.... I saw many children your age go with their mother. This quote expresses that Sholmo wasn't able to experience his son getting beaten just infront of him, thus he was asking for reasons to his son which is implied there.
3. Madame Schachter:
Madame Schter took a great part to foreshadow which played as a warning for all the Jewish people there. We can see that in the quote on page 26, ''Look at the flmaes! Falmes everywhere...'' This quote shows that even though she was hallucinating, she saw the fire coming which symbolized the struggle that people were about to experience in the concentration camp.
iii) If I was in a situation where I was forced to leave my home and my most precious possessions suddenly I would obviously take my family picture album which carries a lot of memories of my life. I would take the gift that I got from my sister because it can be the only thing to recall her memories. I would take my dairy to write my experiences I confront. If this possessions were taken by forcing, I would go insane. I can't even think about the circumstances that I will have to go through.
