Quote Sandwiches and Inferences
Hi everyone,
This week we are going to learn about the characters in The Color of Water.
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 5: "Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating three quote sandwiches, one for
- Ruth (Rachel Shilsky)
- Fischel Shilsky
- Hudis Shilsky
Write paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Ruth is ________________ because __________."
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from chapter 1-5 that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character.

ruth is a independent person who has liberal thoughts because she married a black man regardless of his family to forget about her. We can see this in the quote on page 2.’’’My family mourned me when I married your father.They said Kaddish and sat shiva’’. This quote shows us that her family ignore her when she married a black men they thought that she was died, just for this reason but she didn’t think about her religion.

Fischel shilsky is a person without feelings because he mistreat his wife and didn’t respect his daughter.we can see this in the quote on page 3. ‘’ he was hard as a rock’’. this quote shows us that fIschel didn’t has feelings and love for nobody.
Hudis Shilsky
Hudis Shilsky is a wonderful and gentle person. we can see this in the quote on page 3. ‘’ She was a quiet woman, my sweet Mameh. That’s what we called her, Mameh. This quote shows us that Hudis Shilsky is a person with big feelings who loves her family regardless of the abuse that she received from his husband. She is a person full of love.

Ruth is kind,brave yet rebellious because although her father was against her marriage with James’ father, she still married James’ father regardless anything that her family said.
We can see this in the quote on page 2,“My family mourned me when I married your father.”
This quote shows us that when Ruth married James’ father, her family left her alone and didn’t admit her as part of the family anymore.
Fischel Shilsky
Fischel Shilsky is an Orthodox Rabbi that had stubborn,gruff and sly personalities because he didn’t care about his family,he beat his wife, and establish a strict rules at home.
We can see this quote on page 2,“There were too many rules to follow, too many forbiddens and “you can’ts” and “you mustn’ts” but does anybody they love you? Not in my family we didn’t.”
This quote shows us that Fischel wasn’t a good father and husband because he treated his family terribly.
Hudis Shilsky
Hudis Shilsky is a gentle,pretty,quiet and strong woman because although she had disability, she was still a good,kind mother.
We can see this in quotes on page 3, “She was a quiet woman,my sweet Mameh.” and “ it paralyzed her left side and left her in overall poor health.”
This quotes show us that Hudis was a strong woman despite the disability she had and how bad her husband mistreated her.

This two quote shows she hate her father. First quote shows that her father love money more than love his daughter. No daughter will said her father like a fox, except that daughter hate her father.The second quote shows her father are grim person. “Hard as a rock” shows the father really don’t care his daughter his family. He such a sea fish.
Fischel Shilsky:
Fischel Shilsky is a grim man, he don’t really care about his family and he was mad about her daughter married an African-American.He never care about his family and he only care about his money.
In this story “He was hard as a rock.”
This quote shows us the father was grim man. He don’t care his family.His mind like a stone.His heart like a stone.
Hudis Shilsky:
Hudis Shilsky was pitiful woman and her did not get husband’s love. She is a good woman, didn’t like her husband at all. She is a nice, kind woman.

ReplyDeleteIn our opinion,we think Ruth is don't want people know she was Jewish because when she with her family came to America change the names. So her name makes more America. We can see this quote on page 2 where it says:"I don't remember the name of the town where i was born, but i do remember my Jewish name: Ruchel Dwajra Zylska. My parent got rid of that name when we came to America and changed it to Rchel Deborab Shilsky,and i got rid of that name when i was nineteen and never used it again after i left virginia for good in 1941."This quote shows us that Ruth was hide her Jewish name,and change make it more America.
In our opinion , we think Fischel Shilsky is impassive because he did not very care his wife and kids . His daughter also thought he is unfeeling .

This shows us that he is as a fox and money is the most important to him . In his daughter's mind,he is gruff and he is hard as stone.
We think the author's mother ,Hudis is a strong and a quiet woman.Her family because left before Hitler got through with Polond were wiped out in the Holocaust.She was pretty about her face,but the one thing was bad that she had polio.Where its said"It paralyzed her left side and left her in overall poor health.Her left hand was useless.It was bent at the wrist and held close to her chest.She was nearly blind in her left eye and walked with a severe limp,dragging her left foot behind her."This quote shows us that she wasn't a perfect woman ,but she had a nice thinking way to prove and support her life.Regardless of how her life was inconvenient and hard, she still can be strong to live in her life.

Hudis Shilsky was is a pathetic woman, because she never gets any love from her husband, but she was still kind and nice anyway. We can see this in quotes on page 3, “She was a quiet woman,my sweet Mameh.” This quotes show us that Hudis was a tough woman. No matter how was her husband treated her, she was still goodness and never change.

this quote shows us that why does she leave the family and she said herself is dead , she just married a some one who is her love , but they was obstruct her, therefore , she leave her family .
Rachel Shilsky was dislike and hate her father , her father is Orthodox rabbi , but her father didn't care about her , her father was focus on the religion .and the money ,that is show us why does Rachel Shilsky said he father was a fox , therefore Rachel never felt love of her father.

Ruth (Rachel Shilsky): She was alone, she was hurt, she live her life like dead. She don’t want to talk to anyone about her past because she feel very sad. “They want no parts of me and me I don’t want no parts of them” (pag #1) this quote show us that she never feel like part of member of her own family she never can’t talk about what she felt or what she was thinking in her family they never did that.
Fischel Shilsky: He was a man that where he came from they religion is the thing more important that they have. He was very strict and a father that didn’t have feeling of his family.” He was hard as a rock.” (pag #3) this quote show us that he was a man that didn’t have feelings of his family. He was like a person that don’t like what others people think just do what he are thinking.
Hudis Shilsky: She was a good person and a loving mother. Rachel Shilsky was an interesting character.she is from an orthodox jewish family. her father was a Rabbi.she hated him because of his cruelty towards her and her wounded mother.she was an immigrant in USA. she came from Poland .she was kind and soft-hearted.she took care of many children like James. in other hand, she was also brave, independent and rebellious. because, although her father and her family was against her marriage with a black guy(James’s father), she still married James’ s father without caring anything her family said.
We can see in the 1st line of chapter 1,where it says, “ I’m dead” we can take a look at the quote on page 2 where she told James,“My family mourned me when I married your father.” and also in page 3 where she says,’’Richel shilsky is dead as far as i’m concerned.she had to die in order for me,the rest of me ,to live’’
These quotes shows us that Richel shilsky is no longer happy about her life . she is sad.we could see here that when Ruth married James’ father, her family left her alone and didn’t admit her as part of the family anymore. if we look at the quote in page 3, where she said about her mother, “ She’s the only person in the world I didn’t go right by........ “ we can realize that she also feels guilty because she left her wounded mother to her cruel father.
To conclude, she was a fighter.she struggled through her whole life and she was also victim of conflict between her emotions and the situations she faced in her life and that conflict, changed her life.
Fischel Shilsky:
Fischel Shilsky is an Orthodox Rabbi but he was very cruel and strick.because he didn’t care about his family and established strict rules at home.he just cared about his rules and himself.,he also beat his wounded wife.
We can see this quote on page 2 where Ruth said about him,“There were too many rules to follow, too many forbiddens and “you can’ts” and “you mustn’ts” but does anybody they love you? Not in my family we didn’t.” We can also see in the quote on page 3. ‘’ he was hard as a rock’’. this quote shows us that Hilsky Fischel is not a good husband also is not a good father, he does not love his family.
So, it shows us that Fischel was neither a good father and husband because he treated his family terribly nor a good human being.
Hudis Shilsky:
Hudis Shilsky is a gentle,pretty,quiet and strong woman by her heart because although she had disability and her daughter, Ruth left her, she was still a good,kind mother.
We can see this in the quotes on page 3 “my mother was named Hudis and she was the exact opposite of my dad ,gentle and meek” and “She was a quiet woman,my sweet Mameh.” These quotes show us that Hudis Shilsky is a good woman with a big kind heart.We can see in another quote on page 3,“ it(polio) paralyzed her left side and left her in overall poor health.” that shows she was fighting with her life.
It is clear that Hudis was a strong woman despite the disability she had and how bad her husband mistreated her.So, she was a combination of both soft and strong personality.

Fischel is brave person as i can see because in page 2 says “he escaped from the russian army and snuck over the polish border and married my mother in an arranged marriage . I can see he doesnt care what’s going on with his family or if there a problem with them but in page 3 it says “he was hard as a rock” .We can see this in the quote on page 3 that he obviously he hates his family and wanst a well husband .

Hudis is submissive and amenable ,opposite of fischel as i see it in page 3 .We can see this in quotes on page 3, “She was a quiet woman,my sweet Mameh” . We can see this in the quote on page 3 at the bottom that the person who wrote this lover to much and this person highlights his greatest virtues and also with her disabilities she fought and love her family .

ReplyDeleteRuth is a rebellious because she married a guy her family did not approve. She is also a bit mysterious because even her kids doesn’t know much stuff about her. We can see this in the quote on page xvii, “It took me fourteen years to unearth her remarkable story...” This shows us that Ruth’s kids took more than a decade to know Ruth’s past.
Fischel Shilsky
Fischel is an Orthodox rabbi. He’s not an ideal father and husband. He beats his wife up and does not treat his family properly. We can see on page 2, “He was a fox, especially when it came to money.” This shows us that Fischel is aggressive and gruff.
Hudis Shilsky
Hudis is pretty, nice, calm and gentle. She had disabilities. But at least she treats her kids properly unlike his husband. We can see this in quotes on page 3, “She was a quiet woman,my sweet Mameh.” and “ it paralyzed her left side and left her in overall poor health.” This shows us that Hudis is brave because even if she’s disabled she still didn’tt let that ruin her life.

Ruth is James’ mother, is the one who had been interviewed by her son, in the beginning of the book, she talks about her jewish family and what they did to her when she got married to a black man.
We can see this in the quote on page 1, “ I’m dead. You want to talk about my family and I here I been dead to them for fifty years.”
This quote shows us that she had been abandoned by her family, especially her dad because he was an Orthodox rabbi and they didn’t want to accept such an heretic fact, which was marrying an african american man.
Fischel Shilsky is Ruth’s father, he was a really harsh and demanding person, who sexually abused her and her mother, who married him in an arranged marriage. Ruth and Fischel ended completely their relationship when she decided to marry a black man.
We can see this in quote on page 2,“My father would say, ‘be quiet while I sleep.’”
This quote shows us that Ruth’s father wasn’t a really warm-hearted man and we can see from how the mother talks to her son that he didn’t love her at all.
Hudis Shilsky she was Ruth's mother, she suffered from polio her entire life. she has always been a soft spoken and meek mother, she was also a really heeded person.
We can see in the quote on page 41, “Mameh was a very good wife and mother.”
This quote shows us that Hudis, despite her poor health, always tried to give Ruth best.

Ruth was a brave people and she want to hide her secret, i can see that she doesn’t want other people to know about her everything because she was a Jewish and she was born in Poland, but when she with her family come to America they change the name. Fischel was a bed, Ruthless and Cunning person. because i can see that he didn’t very care his wife and his child. Hudis was a Kind, beautiful, gentle woman, because even she was a Disabled person, but she never give up of herself. And she was very optimism. Fischel Shilsky was a strict , evil and selfish person. We can see this in the quote on pg 16,”I’m a citizen and you’re not.I can send you back to Europe anytime I want.”But he came to America under the sponsorship of his wife’s sister.This proves that
he was a cheater.
Hudis Silky was a very friendly and gentle woman.We can see this in the quote onpg 3,”She was a quiet woman,my sweet mameh,”This proves that she cared about her family and loved them.

Ruth is a woman who married a black man but her family didn’t approve , she change her name when she was 19 years old and when she move to Virginia , she said that she is dead to her family right after she married to the black man , they said kaddish and sat shiva , this show us that her family abandon her when she married the black man .

James had always sensed his mother was different, although in his early life he was not sure why she was different . Rachel Shilsky is a very different character.she is a daughter of an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi. She wanted to live free but her father was a rude and evil person.”There were too many rules to follow ,too many forbidden and “you can’ts”and you “mustn’ts”. The quote shows that her life was very hard when she was living with her family because she had to maintain a lot of rules. It also shows that she only cared for love, she didn’t want to be under strict rules every time.

She is a good mother also and is good as a person because she taught her children a way of thinking about life different from the other’s perspective during that Anti-Semitism time and also that hard time where racism prevailed.We can see this in the quote on page 13: “ I do look like you. He was also a greedy man and a wretched husband because he married Ruth’s mother just because of her money and also disparaged his woman because of her disability. We can see this in the quote on page 41:”He would call her by any name and make fun of her disability. He’d say, “I get sick to look at you,” and “Why do you bother trying to look pretty?” His marriage was a business deal for him. He only wanted money.” This quote shows us that Fishel was wicked husband and man.

ReplyDeleteRuth is a Jewish woman who suffered too much while living with his terrible father. She ran away with a black man, so her family made the jewish rituals as she was dead. Ruth has 12 kids product of her love with his dead husband. She shows to be a good, strong and responsible mother, even though she could possible go through danger in the streets. We can see this in the quote on page 34 “She got up, calmly took my hand, and began to walk without a word.” This quote shows us that she’s brave although the mugger had recently took her purse away she kept walking with her son like nothing had happened. She is not weak and she tried to protect her little son from the robber.
