Quote Sandwiches and Inferences
Hi everyone,
This week we are going to continue to learn about the characters in The Color of Water.
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 6: "Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating two quote sandwiches, one for
- Ruth
- James
Write paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Ruth is ________________ because __________."
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from chapters 11-14 that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character.

RUTH:
Ruth is the mother of James McBride(author).She is a fighter. She never gives up. She struggles with her own courage with her determination to get through the challenges fighting against her family,society,people,customs,cruel life and herself.
Here is a quote from page 29 & lines 6-10 of THE COLOR OF WATER , where James tells about his mother,
“.......Mommy had no model for raising us other than the experience of her own orthodox Jewish family,which despite the seeming flows_______ an unbending nature,a stridency,a focus on money,a deep distrust of all the outsiders,not to mention tyranny ____ represented the best and worst immigrant mentality;......”
It shows that James’s mother, Ruth had to struggle a lot.She had to struggle as an immigrant,she had to suffer from the cruelty of her family and father. She fought with the outsiders who always neglected her. Even, after her husband’s death,she also lost her love for which she fought against the whole world and put her life at risk. She is struggling for her children.So, life is challenging her every time.But she never gives up and getting through the challenges with a hope to succeed.
JAMES:
The character James is the author,James McBride himself.This is an important character in THE COLOR OF WATER . James is courageous. He is surrounded by the relations and his questions about his true identity, and he has been being confused about it. He is fighting with the doubt that he has to bear throughout his whole life.
Here is a quote from page 117 & lines 11-12 to page 118 & lines 1-5 of THE COLOR OF WATER , where it says,
“As a small boy, I was never quite aware of the concept of “father”. My real father, Andrew McBride, died before I was born. I was lorded over Mommy, my older siblings, friends of Ma’s, and relatives on my father’s and stepfather’s side whom years later,I would recognize as guiding forces in my life .”
and also the quote from page 29 & lines 17-20, where it says,
“Yet conflict was a part of our life,written into our very faces,hands,arms, and see how contradiction lived and survived it’s existence.”
James had to look no further than his own mother. He always questions about his existence and true reality of his white mother. He had to struggle with that doubt in his mind and also of outsiders, and he tried to reveal this truth besides it. Moreover, he had many challenges throughout his whole life. So, he had to work hard to bear this unacceptable reality throughout his entire life. But he didn't escaped from it. He fought the world and himself to get through it with his courage and hope.
Ruth is James’ mother. She is a fighter she never give up, even her life is not so good. But she always believes something. She believes god, she believes family, she believes love.

This quote shows no matter how her life will be, she always stand there. She always don’t give up. Because she loves her family love her kids. She believes love will be around as she believes god. She is a fighter, fighter for her kids.

Ruth is a rebel person who decided to follow her heart without care about what her family would say, she is just a person who want to be free even though if she has to break the rules.
‘’ I was loved, I was loved, and i didn’t care what anyone thought. page 112. this quote shows as Ruth was fighting for her love against the society and her family.
James
James is a very curios person who wants to know more about his mother.’’ page 125 ‘’I used to look at him and wonder, what is his problem? `doesn’t he know goofy he looks? this quote shows as that james have a lot of questions and is a wondering person

Ruth is a kind hard working woman,because after her brother Sam ran off,she has to work on the store everyday after school.We can see this in the quote on page 108,”My daily routine never changed :Open the store at seven, school still three, come straight home and work till ten ,the flop to sleep.”This quote shows us that Ruth is hard working and she need to work to the store everyday until ten ,and also she goes to school everyday.There are so many pressures on her.
Before James’s stepfather died,James was a good guy.James’s situation became bad because his stepfather died.Where can show us the quote on page 142 and lines 7.”Reefer and wine helped me to forget any pain,and as the pain and guilty increased,my problems with drugs worsened.”This quote shows us that James began to do poorly in school, use drugs, and get involved in petty thief.He was only aware later that much of this phase related to the anger he felt at his situation.

“ So it stands to reason that the first thing I fell in love with was a black man. I didn’t do it on purpose. i was a rebellious little girl in my own quiet way, but i wasn’t so rebellious that i wanted to risk my own life or anybody’s else life.” on page 107.
It tells us that Ruth is a rebel. Her dad didn’t allow her to keep out of men, especially black men, but she didn’t listen and finally fell in love with a black man. Even though she ignored her father’s words, but she wouldn’t dare to risk anyone’s life.
James was a smart, good kid, but later in his teenage time, he became rebellious and disobedient for some reason.
“ i attended Benjamin cardozo high School in Bayside, Queens, and while I had been a good student in the ninth grade, the following year i more or less dropped out. i failed everything. i left home in the mornings and simply didn’t go to school.” on page 138.
It tells us that soon after his stepfather died and his mom became more quiet,grieve about her husband’s death, James became out of control. He ditched school,failed every classes and almost dropped out. It’s more or less because of his family’s situation.
Ruth
ReplyDeleteRuth is a good mother. Even though she doesn’t have time for her kids, she still tries to keep an eye on them. We can see this on page 69 “ We weren’t even allowed to say the word “lie,” we had to use “story””. This quote shows us that Ruth wants for her kids the best. She teaches to them what they should learn. She is at work, but she never abandon them.
James
James is always interested about everything, he is always asking several things to her. Even though he is just a boy, he has many questions for her. We can see this on page 50 “.. and one afternoon on the way home from school I asked her whether God was black and white.” This shows us that James is curious, sometimes making hard questions to answer. Instead of playing, she prefers to ask things.

Ruth is a disappointed women . She wants to get marrige with her boyfriend , because of he cares about his race and then he denies her . We can see this on page 114"'Let's run off to the country and get married,' and he said,'No way . I don't know where that's been done before , white and black marrying in Virgina . They will surely hang me . '"This quote shows us that Ruth abandons something to get together with him , but he doesn't have courage to do that . It makes her hopeless .
James
James is a caring boy . He is careful with his brother Walther whatever he goes to the hospital . We can see this on page 126 " One night about three years after he moved in with us , he was staggering around the kitchen , cursing and saying his head hurt , and before I knew it , an ambulance pulled up and they were loading him in . 'What's wrong with him ?' I asked Ma . "This quote shows us that James is really care with his brother . He is worry about his brother will get addcident .

In our opinion,Ruth is a equal person because although many racism in the world, prejudice black people but Ruth didn't do it, she fell in love with black person. The quote on page 107, where it says,"If there was on thing Tateh didn't like more than gentiles, it was black folks. and if there was one thing he didn't like more than black folks in general, it was in particular. so it stands to reason that he first thing i fell in love with in life was a black man." This quote shows us Ruth is a equal person. She didn't care any race.
James:
In our opinion , we think James was a person that sentient and thankful because he loved his stepfather . On page 118 , James said ,"He married her and made the baseball team his own ,adding four more kids to make it an even twelve . He made no separation between the McBride and Jordan children , and my siblings and I never thought of or referred to each other as half brothers and sisters ; for the powerless Little Kids , myself included , he was "Daddy" . James did not hate McBride because of he is James' stepfather . In opposition , James loved his stepfather . He knew his stepfather took care of all children like his own . Because all of this , I think James was sentient and thankful .

she is a mother of 12 childrens. she still work hard to feed her children. she never give up in life she work hard to succeed in life.The quote on page 107, where it says,"If there was something Tateh didn't like more than gentiles, it was black folks. and if there was one thing he didn't like more than black folks in general, it was in particular. so it stands to reason that he first thing i fell in love with in life was a black man." This quote shows us she didn't care about the race she fell in love and she was not in one of them who were racist like her father.

James was a shy person. He cares about his mom a lot he love her and could do anything for her he use to ask too many question. this quote on page 36 “ when they were out of sight, i turned to black panther son sitting behind me and punched him square in the face with my fist” this quote shows us how much he loves his mom even though he doesn't like to fight and he knows that he could get in trouble for that still he punched that kid.

Ruth is a pitiful woman that she never got any love, but she was a tough woman.
We can see this in the quote on page 107, “I wanted love, nice clothes, a date. I never had that. My life was the store. My life hadn’t changed since elementary school.”
This quotes shows us that Ruth was hunger for love, but she never got it. but she’s a tough woman, she went to elementary school and worked at the store as well as routine.
James
James is a tough man. He didn’t got any love from his father, but he never give up and still fight for his life.

I think she would like to spend more time with her kids but she cant .Since now I have read many quotes that show me how important are her children to ruth and she overcame many obstacles for the welfare of her children and her family .Despite of all the suffering that she overcame because she was abuse by her father , She never mind about it . She only try to love her kid , take care of them , and give them all she has .

James is one of those person who has to live his life knowing that an important person in his childhood doesnt love him .We can clearly see while we are reading the book that after her stepdad died , he became such a bad and rebel guy .One quote that I remember told that james no longer had any interest in the school and he started using drugs , what would make him a good thieve ..

In pages 112 says " I was loved , I as loved , I didn't care what anyone though " this show as that for her , her family was the most important thing without caring what other people could say or think about them , she just live for her family .

ReplyDeleteRuth was a typical rebellious teenager. She wanted to fit in, and get the things she knew her father would not want for her. She was a Jewish girl fell in love with a black man even she knew that it will get her into a big trouble. She wanted the same things most girls want.
We can see this in the quote on page 107, “But when I became a teenager, I wanted the same things any teenage girl wants. I wanted love, nice clothes, a date.”
This quote shows us that Ruth became a typical teenage girl who became rebellious like most teenagers during her teenage years.
James was a good student who went into the wrong path during his teenage years after the death of his stepfather whom he considered as his real father.
We can see this in the quote on page 138 as James himself explains his dark past, “I attended Benjamin cardozo high School in Bayside, Queens, and while I had been a good student in the ninth grade, the following year i more or less dropped out. i failed everything. i left home in the mornings and simply didn’t go to school.”
This quote shows us that James turn into a rebellious teenage boy who’s ‘exploring’ the world after his stepfather died. He was pressured because he was the oldest kid in the house, and his mother was depressed.

Ruth is subservient person because she endured constant ridicule at school and sought a way to escape her inferior status in Suffolk. We can see this quote on page 80, “I know what it feels like when people laugh at you walking down the street, or snicker when they hear you speaking Yiddish, or just look at you with hate in their eyes. This quote shows us that She had difficulty making friends there, but she never feel bad for that when somebody see her was unfriendly.
James
James is agile person because he felt embarrassed by his mother's race and her identity when his friends were discussing this problem for them. We can see this quote on page 94, “ the question of race was like the power of the moon in my house. It’s what made the river flow, the ocean swell, and the tide rise, but it was a silent power, intractable, indomintable, indisputable, and thus completyly ignorable.” This quote shows us that James continually questioned his mother about his relatives, but she only mentioned those on his father's side, and eventually informed him that she was "dead" to her family.

ReplyDeleteI think that Ruth was Jewish and an independent woman that does not care about what other people think about her and her husband because he was black. She was a woman that does not like to follow too many rules in her religion and for that she was dead for her family because she wanted be independent. We can see in this quote on pag 107 "I was a rebellious little girl in my own quiet way, but I wasn't so rebellious that I wanted to risk my own life or anybody else's life." This quote shows us that Ruth was a good girl just a little bit rebellious with somethings, but not everything while it can put her or anybody in risk.
I think James was a good boy that love his mother and that likes to hear his morther story he wrotes a book "The color of water" to give a tribute to his white mother and all the mothers that are everything to their children and because they are father and mother at the same time for their children like his mother because his father Andrew McBride died when he was born. We can see in this quote in pag 139 "He led us around the freight yards at gunpoint for about an hour, waving his gun under our noses and saying, "You nigger scum. I should shoot you right now." This quote shows us that James passed between discrimination from his friends because se was black and that they did bulling to him when he was in shcool.

Ruth was a very hardworking and responsible woman. She had a very hard and dissappointed life from her childhood. She was born in a jewish family. She was having a really hard time living in a jewish family because nobody cared about her. Her parents rejected her from the family whem she married a black person. She left her family but still that didn’t change her life after all. She had 12 children and she had to take care of all of them just by herself after her husband was dead. On page 50 she says, “I’m crying because I am happy”. These shows that she is not in a good situation but still she is free from those rules of her family. But the memory of those days makes her dippressed.

James was a very careful and curious person. He always loved his mother and was very concered about her. He had a very hard life with a big family a nd not having a father. In page 29 he says,“Yet conflict was a part of our life,written into our very faces,hands,arms, and see how contradiction lived and survived it’s existence.” This shows that James had a really hard and difficult life.

ReplyDeleteRUTH: is a good mother that has 12 children. She was kind with her kids and also she wanted the best for her kids, and wanted that they could have the best future for them. She was a jew but she decided to marry a black man, so I can say that she was very independently. In page 92 there is a quote to shows that: “you’re a human being, she snapped.”Educate yourself or you’ll be a nobody”. This shows us that she really care about the future of her children, because she wanted them will successful.
JAMES: he was a good kid and a good son, because he worried about his mother. Also he was a curious boy because he always asked a lot of questions to his mother. A quote from the story is:”mind your own bussines. Never ask questions or your mind will end up like a rock.” This shows us that James was really curious so the mother was tired of the questions he asked.

and how she can help them reach success.On pg 88 James says,”When we
dutifully arrived with the papers,she would pore over the carefully,searching-

Ruth spent her busy time taking care of all her children.

James was thoughtful and affectionate because he was always aware of
his mother’s safety. On pg 7 James says,”Her oddness,her complete unawareness
of what the world thought of her,a nonchalance in the face of what I perceived to be

Ruth was the typical rebellious girl that would do the opposite thing of what her father would say.
She was a brave person who didn’t stop on the first obstacles that she had.
We can see this in the quote on page We can see this in the quote on page 107, “But when I became a teenager, I wanted the same things any teenage girl wants. I wanted love, nice clothes, a date.” This quote shows us that Ruth even if in her life had many problems she still wanted to have the same things that a normal teenager wanted.
James is a very trustful and nice son for his mom. He always loved her and always admired her. He was very interested about his mom’s past. We can see this in the quote on page 117 “As a small boy, I was never quite aware of the concept of “father”. My real father, Andrew McBride, died before I was born. I was lorded over Mommy, my older siblings, friends of Ma’s, and relatives on my father’s and stepfather’s side whom years later,I would recognize as guiding forces in my life”. In this quote it shows how thankful James is of the luck he had to have a good education of life, of school.
