This week we are going to continue to learn about the characters in The Color of Water, from chapters 20-24.
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 8: "Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating two quote sandwiches, one for
- Ruth
- James
Write paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Ruth is ________________ because __________."
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from chapters 20-24 that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character.

“Not if you marry a nigger you won’t,he said.”Don’t come back”."We can see this in the quote on page 215. this quote shows as that that even though ruth father said to her that never come back anyway she continue her life always thinking in her mother. this quote prove how ruth doesn’t go back and just try to look to the future without give up.
James:is a person who something prefer to be quiet in a different situation.”I said nothing .listening in silence.I imagined that the news of mommy’s marriage crashed the jewish community like an earthquake.we can see this quote on page 226.this quote shows as that he is quiet in this situation because even if listened something he didn’t say anything is better don’t say anything that get a problem.

In our opinion, James was a person that was good at social contact because he understood the social contact very much .And he knew how to catch the relationship between the white people and the America-Africa . We can see this quote on page 204," In some ways I was caught between the worlds of black and white as well, because I'd discovered after college and graduate school that the earnest change-the-world rap sessions me and my schoolmates had that lasted till four A.M. didn't change the world one iota." This quote shows us James was good at social contact because of the things he wrote in this quote .
Ruth is a strong woman she will fight for her love or something she loves. She has her own idea about love and family. She think marriage is sacred. In the quote

Ruth explains her first ideal marriage to her son James. Though she and Dennis had everything against them, they were happy together and in love. This is more important to her than the social consequences of an interracial marriage.
James is a strong person as his mother. He was lost but he find himself and get up again and again to overcome the challenge to be succeed in life.
“The man died without a penny, yet his children grew up to graduate from college, to become doctors, professors, teachers, and professionals all (Chpt. 24, p. 251).
James describes the legacy his father left to his eight children after he died at the age of forty-five. He left them no money but a home filled with love and vision. His wife carried out the vision of getting them out of the ghetto by getting them educated through scholarships.
Ruth She chose an unconventional life, and succeeds in it because she has the grit and conviction to endure hardships. also she i strong woman who works hard in things that she want . . in chapter 23 explain how she suffer when her mother die and she didn't eat many days just thinking in her mother

We can see this in the quote on page 216.”I right away went out and called Aunt Mary and asked if she knew where Mamed was. She said, “You’re out of the family. Stay out. We sat shiva for you. You can ‘t see her. “ Well, that just hurt me to the bone. “ This shows that Ruth wants to stay with her parents, but they don’t accept her. It’s only way to go to sitting shiva.
James is sanguine because he has interpret the racism. We can see this quote on page 204,"Racism is a problem that should end just about the time we graduate." This quote shows us James was passed though the race. Whatever people say something about the discrimination in their action for him. He just pass it, and keep going with his goal.

Jemes was working hard. We can see this quote on page 251 “The man died without a penny, yet his children grew up to graduate from college, to become doctors, professors, teachers, and professionals all it was the work they said” this quote show us that he was working really hard .

Ruth is absolutely tough as a rock, even though Ruth knew that she gotta pay what she going to do, she still go on.
We can see this in the quote on page 204, “I right away went out and called Aunt Mary and asked if she knew where Mameh was. She said, “ You’re out of the family. Stay out. We sat shiva for you. You can’t see her.” Well, that just hurt me to the bone.”
This shows us that Ruth did something that her family doesn’t accept it, but she still care about her family member. Finally, she got hurt so bad from Aunt Mary when she came back to see Mameh.
James has realized something new from the world between black and white. We can see this quote on page 204, “In some ways I was caught between the worlds of black and white as well, because I'd discovered after college and graduate school that the earnest change-the-world rap sessions me and my schoolmates had that lasted till four A.M. didn't change the world one iota."
This shows us james has communicated between the world of black and white, and then he realized that the world still has racism anywhere, however.

Ruth is kind-hearted and caring woman, yet she always has been strong-willed and secretive, especially about her past life.
We can see this in the quote on page 207,”I had never heard that name before. Even in recounting what little she had told me of her life, Mommy had never referred to herself as Rachel.”
This quote shows us that Ruth didn’t even tell James what her real name was. She has always kept everything about her inside by herself and she rarely told anyone,even to her own son.
2. James
James is a nice man who is thoughtful and considerate about people’s feelings.
We can see this in the quote on page 227,”I kept the tape with his greeting to Mommy on it for years, and while I never played it for her, thinking it might be too emotional for her to hear it, I played it for myself many times, thinking, wishing, hoping that the world would be this open-minded”
This quote shows that James didn’t want his mom to listen to the recording which was a greeting from his mother’s friend because he thought that if Ruth listened to it, it would just open the scar,it would remind Ruth about her horrible past life and she might get hurt by it. So, he decided to just keep it to himself.

Ruth is a strong woman that she never give up, she always protect her family and always care about they. She is a person that never wants to say her past because was very difficult and her own family didn’t know who was her in her past . “I had never heard that name before. Even in recounting what little she had told me of her life, Mommy had never referred to herself as Rachel.” with can see this quote in pag 207. This quote show us that Ruth wanted to don’t say her personality and what really her come from and she pass to moments very hard for her and it’s help her to grow up and never give up in life.
James is a person that his personality is very normal, is like he understand his mother’s past and he is a good son, he loves his family, he doesn't wants that never bad happen in his family and he give support to his mother. He is a person very quite and he respect what his mother say “Like most people, I don’t know what I’ll do when my mother makes that final walk home.” we can see this quote in pag 256. This quote show us that James respect his mother a lot and he was a person like others normal.

RUTH:
Ruth is the mother of James McBride(author).She is a fighter. She struggles against herself and her pains with her own courage and with her determination to get through the challenges fighting against her family,society,people,customs,cruel life and herself.
Here is a quote from page 271 of THE COLOR OF WATER , where Ruth tells James about her life,
“I was depressed for months. I lost weight and couldn't eat and was near suicide. I kept saying why couldn't it have been me that died? I would go long walks and would forget where I was. I'd be someplace and couldn't remember how I got there.”
and also the quote from page 216, where Ruth tells James,
“I right away went out and called Aunt Mary and asked if she knew where Mamey was. She said, “You’re out of the family. Stay out. We sat shiva for you. You can’t see her. “ Well, that just hurt me to the bone.”
and also the quote from page 215, where Ruth’s father says to Ruth,

It shows that James’s mother, Ruth had to face a lot of pain in her life.She loves her mother but she lost her.It was an unbearable pain to her. She was feeling guilty.So,she had to fight against herself.Even, her father told her to never come back anyway she continue her life always thinking about her mother. She was considered as dead for her family and society,custom,religion and people.She is disappointed with her life.Life is challenging her every time.But she never gives up and tries to get through the challenges with a hope to succeed.
JAMES:
The character James is the author,James McBride himself.This is an important character in THE COLOR OF WATER . James is courageous. He is surrounded by the poverty,problems,racism and also with his dreams that didn't came true.James is a stronger man.He faced a lot of risk in his life and he never lost hope and never got scared to face it.
Here is a quote from page 204 of THE COLOR OF WATER , where James says,
“I wanted to leave myself behind.I had been working as a feature writer at the Boston Globe, a great job for a twenty-years-old reporter...In some ways I was caught between the worlds of black and white as well,because I’d discovered after college and graduate school that the earnest change-the-world rap sessions me and my schoolmates had that lasted till four A.M didn’t change the world one iota.”
and also the quote from page 251, where James says,

It shows that James had problems of not having money and education but he never gave up. He wanted to be established and successful.Even,he wanted to go to Europe.But he couldn't live his dreams.Moreover, he had many other challenges throughout his whole life. So, he had to work hard to bear unacceptable reality throughout his entire life. But he didn't escaped from it. He fought against the world and himself to get through it with his courage and hope.

This quote show us that when his father die, and his father leave eight children to Jame, and without the money. But Jame didn't give up of that, he have to work hard to feed his family, and he become a successful person of that.

Ruth is a good mother with a good heart, but also mysterious and
secretive because no one knows who she really was, and her past life, not even her kids.
We can see this in the quote on page 205, “It had taken years to solicit this information about where she grew up.”
This quotes shows us that even James, her son who was so curious about her past had taken years to find out where his mom grew up. Ruth forget all of her past and doesn’t want to recall it to anyone.
2. James
James is a normal boy who is still finding his dreams, what he wants in life and his racial identity. He hasn’t fully find his place in this world yet.
We can see this in the quote on page 204, “....but I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be a writer or musician, not knowing it was possible to do both.”
This quotes show us that James is still indecisive whether he likes to be a writer or musician more. He still figuring out what he wants to do with his life.

this quotes shows us that It was hard for him to believe that some white people actually thought that black people were just like them in that epoch, that was happening a lot of prejudice.

this quotes shows us that even if her father denied her to do something she did it anyway because she cared more about herself and her well being rather than a prohibition given from his dad just because of prejudice. This is one of many examples that we can see from the book where Ruth did what she felt and not what was aloud to be done.
James
James has always been a caring person towards his mother and always tried to find out more about her past and what she has done.

ReplyDeleteRuth is a decided woman because she decided to go back to New York even though her father didn’t want to let her go and her mother was sick. We can see this in the quote in page 215 “I’ll get you a route, he said. You can have your own route, selling supplies to farmers in the country. You’ll make a bundle. Or you can get a job in Norfolk. You can move there. “I said no”. This quote shows us that Ruth had her own decision and she would fight to defend her word.
James is a curious guy because he went where his mother’s family lived just to know deeply her history. We can see this in in page 206: “So I went to suffolk looking for Frances and her mother who could cook like the Dickens” This shows us that James was really interested in her background story.

ReplyDeleteI think that Ruth was Jewish and an independent woman that does not care about what other people think about her and her husband because he was black and their children too. She was a woman that does not like to follow too many rules in her religion and for that she was dead for her family because she wanted be independent. We can see in this quote on page 214 “I left over Mameh’s objections too. She said, “You can have a good life here”, but I said “I can’t live here, Mameh,”and she didn’t bring it up ever again or ask me to stay any longer. There was no life in Suffolk for me”. This quote shows us that Ruth wants to try something new because she left from where she was born because she wants to get everything from her own and not from others to be independent.
I think James was a good boy that love his mother and that likes to hear his mother story he wrote a book "The color of water" to give a tribute to his white mother and all the mothers that are everything to their children and because they are father and mother at the same time for their children like his mother because his father Andrew McBride died when he was born. James McBride was a black man with a white mother and he love her between the discrimination at him because of his skin color. We can see in this quote on page 204 “In some ways I was caught between the worlds of black and white as well ,. because I'd Discovered after college and graduate school that the earnest change-the-world rap session me and my classmate had that lasted till four A.M. didn’t change the world one iota. James McBride- He is the son of Ruth. He faced a lot of problems in his life, but he never gives up. We can see this quote from page 204,

this is shows us James McBride is a brave man, he never gives up because he have the hope that Racism is going to end.

ReplyDeleteJames was a really hard-working and curious person. He was very eager to about her mother’s past, about her family and so far. When he was a little child her mother didn’t tell him anything but as he grew up she started to tell James about her life. James was so excited that he wanted to figure out where and which kind of environment her mother were grew up. In page 219 he says, “It’s a small, old, white buildings with four tall columns and a row of stairs leading to a doorway. This is the synagogue that young Rachel Shilsky walked to with her family and where Rabbi Shilsky led the congregation during the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement and fasting.” So we can see that James was so curious to know her mother’s past that he went to vidit the place that her mother was grew up.
Ruth:
Ruth was a Jewish woman who had faced a lot of problems through her life. She was struggling to survive. She had a very unhappy life because her parents were rude and unbending. In page 215 we can see her arguing with her father, “If you marry a nigger, don’t ever come home again. Don’t come back.” I will come to see Mameh. “ Not if you marry a nigger you won’t, don’t come back.” So we can see that her parents are gonna refuse her as a daughter and remove her from the family if she marry a black person.

This quote shows that James kept quiet in a situation like that, because if he saw or heard something he did not nothing about that. he respected the other people situations.

ReplyDeleteRuth is strong woman and she help her mother when her mother alive and with her, we also can see on pg 217. “I lost weight and couldn’t eat and was near suicide.”This shows
that how much she loves her mother and cared about when she passed away.
James was really hard working and strong person with a higher mentality.On pg 251 we can see that he says “ the man died without a penny ,yet his children grew up to graduate from college, to become doctors, profofessor,teachers,and professionals all.” this shows that James worked really hard along with his family to make him successful in his life.

We can see this in the quote on page 215. “ If you marry a nigger, do not ever come home again, do not come back.” This quote shows us that her father never like her husband and fought bitterly with him, but she made decide that left them finally.
James was a nostalgic person because he wanted to understand his own. We can see this in the quote on page 204. “ I can clearly remember saying to my black college roommate in my freshman in my freshman year, racism is a problem that should end just about the time we graduate. ”This quote shows us that he has reached about his own racial identity.
RUTH :- Ruth was an important character in this book. she was author mother. shae was an mother of 12th children. she was a loving women. she loved her mother to much. when she left home her mother was dei. she try to say sorry her mother but she can’t.In page 217 show us that.
