Quote Sandwiches and Inferences
Hi everyone,
This week we are going to review the characters in "The Man Who Was Almost a Man" by Richard Wright
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 4: "Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating three quote sandwiches, one for
Write paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Dave is ________________ because __________."
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from the story that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character.

Dave is a little boy who thinks that can get respect by getting a gun what I think it
is kind of stupid .. because he thinks that he will gain respect if he get power in
some way .

This shows us that although he had the gun , he did something stupid and as a
result of that everyone is making fun of him , so he didn’t earn the respect he think
he can get , and now he needs to face the consequences for his acts .
Mother
The mother is kind of bossy over her son Dave because she is always telling him
what he should be doing.

She is just doing what is better for Dave and she is trying to keep him out from
problems.
Father
The father gives the sensation that he is rude or extrict , bossy and that he
doesn’t even have a good relationship with Dave because Dave is always
afraid of him , he seems like he doesn’t like to talk with him .

With this quote we can assume that Dave really doesn’t like to be near his father
because maybe he will beat him or something else.

ReplyDeleteDave is a seventeen year old boy who works at the fields so he can help his parents out with the money,he didn’t go to school and that’s why he has no education.He wants to be respected by everyone but he can’t really make this happen,nobody seems to understand him and he feels alone.
We can see this in the quote on page 1 “Them ni**ers can’t understan nothing.”
This quote shows us how he feels alone and has nobody that he can share his ideas with.
Mother
Mother is a bossy lady who likes to care of her son and tries to make him a better person,she doesn’t let Dave buy a gun but Dave begs for it and like most moms would do she finally gave him the money.
We can see that she is bossy in this quote on page 2 “Yuh git up from there and git to the well n wash yoself!”
This quote shows how she doesn’t let dave sit down and eat if he doesn’t wash his hands first.
Father
The father is also bossy but more than the mom Dave is scared of him because he is afraid that he will beat him up,they don’t have a very good relationship with his son and they don’t really talk a lot.
We can see that Dave is scared of the father on page 3(third column) “He hid not want to mention money before his father”
This quote shows us how he is scared to talk about money with his father because he is sure that if he says no his mother will not give him any.

Dave is stubborn person because his mother required that do not have a gum because you keep it that is dangerous for Dave, but he always try to persuade her mother that get a gum please.
We can see this in the quote on page 3, “ Ma, Ahm almos a man now. Ah wans a gun.”
This quotes shows us that Dave must wants a gum by himself, he and her mother both was argue that this event actually.
Mother
The mother is bossy person because the mother’s behavior and tone are bossy to Dave.
We can see this in the quote on page 2. “ She grabbed his shoulder and pushed him. “
This quotes shows us that she did not satisfy for her son because he didn’t tell her mother the truth and he lied her mom.
Father
The father is serious person because Dave was scared him when his father talk to him.
We can see this in the quote on page 5. “ Where you git the gun from? “
This quotes shows us that Dave face to face his father was very nervous and uneasy, although his father asked some questions for him and he told his father the truth cleanly.

Dave is a teenage who try to get power buying a gun . He think that he has a gun all the people will respect him.On page 1 said””Shucks.Mistah Joe ,Ahm gittin to be a man like anybody else! “joe laughed and wiped his greasy white face with a red banana “ “whut you planning on buying? Dave looked at the floor ,scratched his head ,scratched his thigh ,and smile.Then he looked up shyly” in this quote we can see that Dave friend laughed of him ,and he feel bad. It’s for this reason that Dave buy a gun to make him feel good with power.
Dave’s mother is intense because she want to her son what she want and alway she is in Dave to control her son life,but neves she try to teach Dave what is bad or what is good.On page 2 said “ she grabbed his shoulder and pushed him .He stumbled out of the room ,then came back to get the catalogue “ In this quote we can see that dave mother don't teach to his son to tell that is bad what he try to do.
Dave’s father is dominating because Dave is scared of him because he is afraid he will beat him up . They don’t have a good relationship .On page 3 said “he hid not want to mention money before his father “ This quote show that Dave scare to his father and don’t have a truth to talk with him of the things that he want to do.

Dave’s mother is bossy and she love clean because when Dave came back she told him to wash his body because she don't like dirty things.
We can see this in the quote on page 2, "‘where yuh been, boy’ his mother held a steaming dish of black-eyed peas. ‘Aw, ma, Ah jus stopped down the road t talk wid the boys.’ ‘Yuh know bettah t keep suppah waitin.’ He sat down, resting the catalogue on the edge of the table. ‘Yuh git up from there and git to the well n wash yoself! Ah ain feedin no hogs in mah house.’"
This quotes shows us that Dave’s mother is very bossy and she loves clean she dont like Dave when he is not clean and she let him to wash himself.

This quote show us that Dave wants to get respect, so he wants buy a gun to show his power, but he did not realize it’s wasn’t a good idea. It shows that he is a selfish poor coward.
Dave’s mother is a non educated, poor housewife. She cares about her son Dave, and she cares about her little poor family. In my opinion, she is a good housewife and cares a lot of her famliy.
This quote from the story tell us about this character. We can see this quote in page on 3. “Yeah, but ain no usa yuh thinking bout throwin nona it erway. Ahm keepin tha money sos yuh kin have close t go to school this winter.”
This quote shows us that Dave wants to get a gun, but his mother did not let get 2 dollars for a gun. Because she knows her son need close for school. So we can see she is a careful woman, she do care about her family.
Dave’s father is a non educated, poor and bossy man. He do cares about his son, but usually he beat his son when his son have done some mistake. His son Dave scared of him, In my opinion he is not a very good father.
This quote from the story tell us about this character. We can see this quote in page on 5. “Yuh wan me t take a tree n beat yuh till yuh talk!”
This quote shows us that Dave’s father is a bossy man, he beat his son very often. Even he just wants his son doing the right things, but he get wrong way to do it.

ReplyDeleteDave is selfish because his mother let him buy the gum, and tell him that he should give the gum to her, but Dave didn’t, he keeps the gum for himself. We can see this in the quote on page 3, “He had not come straight home with it as his mother had asked; instead he had stayed out in the fields, holding the weapon in his hand, aiming it now and then at some imaginary foe.” This quote shows us that Dave is selfish because after he bought the gum, he didn’t give it to his mother, he keeps for himself to play it.

Dave’s mother is bossy and poor because she does not agree that Dave buy a gun, when he knew Dave want to buy gun her very angry, because she does not have the extra money to buy a gun.We can see this in the quote on page 3 “ Git outta here!Don yuh talk t me bout no gun1Yuh a fool!”this quotes shows us that she is very angry ,she does not agree Dave have a gun.She ordered that he took his gun out.

Dave feels insecurity and he wants to get power no matter what, probablily because he needs attention.”The frist movement he made the following morning was reach under his pillow for the gun.in the gray light of dawn he held it loosely, felling a sense of power. could kill a man with a gun like this.Kill anybody, black or white and if he were holding his gun in his gan nobody could run over him.” This quote show us how insecurity is Dave because he needs a gun to feel some kind of power, he wants respect and he thinks the only way he can get it is to holding a gun, the gun makes him more comfortable with himself.
Mother:
Dave’s mother is bossy but a good mother, although sometimes she decides things that could be dangerous for his son.”Lawd knows yuh don need no gun.But pa does. yuh bring it right back t me, yuh hear?agma put it up. Now if yuh don, ahma have yuh pa lick yuh hard yuh won forget it.” This quote show us that she take care of his son although she is givin him the money and the permision to him to buy a gun whict is too dangerous because he is minor and also because he can use that money to buy something else that he needs.
Father:
Dave’s father doesn’t have a good communication with his son, but he is trying to make his soon responsable like a man.”take that gun n git yo money back n carry it t Mistah Hawkins yuh hear?” This quote show us that the father is trying to give his son a lesson and face his consequences.

I think that Dave Saunders is a boy that just care about himself and nobody else. He is boy that is 17, but he wants to act like a man having a gun. He is an ignorant boy because he thinks that having a gun he will get respect, but that’s not true because he will get problem. Dave is a person that doesn’t care about what advises his family give to him, but he care about what people say or think about him.
We can see this in the quote on page 3 “ Whut yu wan wida gun, Dave? Yuh don need no gun. Yuh’ll git in trouble. N ef yo pa jus thought Ah let yuh have money t buy a gun he’d hava fit.”
This quote shows us that Dave hesitant to have a gun and that he doesn’t care about what his mom says. Also that the mom is giving an advice to him to not get in trouble with anyone, but he doesn’t care because he wants to has a gun.
DAVE’S MOTHER
I think that Dave’s mother is scare, bossy, poor, and rude because she is strict with Dave about having a gun. She is a protective mom that doesn’t want to leave his son and buy a gun because he can shoot himself. She and Dave have a good relationship.
We can see this in the quote on page 3 “Git outta here! Don yuh talk t me bout no gun! Yuh a fool!”
This quote means that Dave’s mom is rude because she is yelling him that she doesn’t want to know about guns or having a gun because is dangerous for a boy is 17 years old almost a man, but not because Dave is not a man, he is a teenager and for her mom wants to protect him too and don’t let him buy a gun.
DAVE’S FATHER
I think that Dave’s father is strict, unfriendly, has a bad mood, and serious. Dave’s father and Dave don’t have a good relationship because Dave is scare of his father. The father like to solve any problem that he has with Dave just hitting Dave. Also he is protective and he wants give the best to Dave and help him to not get in trouble.
We can see this in the quote on page 6 “Take tha gun n git yo money back n carry it t Mistah Hawkins, yuh hear? N don fergit Ahma lam you black bottom good fer this! Now march yosef on home, suh!”
This quote means that Dave’s father is strict and that he wants to resolve the Dave’s problem because he got a gun having 17 years old and without knowing anything about how to use a gun. Also that Dave’s father said that Dave have to pay the two dollars to Mr. Hawkins because Dave killed Jenny and if Dave doesn’t do it he will hit Dave.
Dave is a child that want to be a man , he don’t want to be even one second more a child so he decide to take bad decisions and do whatever to be a man .

Her mother is angry strictly and also she is poor but she want a good life for his son , she doesn’t want that his children take bad decisions she want that his children go to the school and graduate for the high school ..

This quote show us that her mother is angry and just she want a good future for his soon she doesn’t want that his children be in trouble .
His father is angry and he has a bad relationship with his soon also his father is a worker and he is responsible with his family .

ReplyDeleteDave is a mad person and who feels alone. He couldn’t do anything when people are discriminated against him. He thinks that he old enough to has a gun. So, he decided to buy a gun to scare others people, to get respect from other people.
We can see this quote page 3, “In the gray light of draw he held it loosely, feeling a sense of power. Could kill a man with a gun like this. Kill anybody, black or white. And if he were holding his gun in his hand, nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him.”
This quote shows us that gun means to him is a power, strength, and freedom. He thinks he could kill anybody, no matter who they are. And everyone will respect him, will not laugh at him.
Dave’s mother is a serious, domineering and strict person, because she doesn’t want her son to get into bad decision, she wants her son to be a educated person.

This quote shows us that his mom is strict person care about he will get into trouble, care about his future, and save money for the positive things for him.
Dave’s father is a fierce, strict, unfriendly, and serious person. Dave and his father doesn’t have a good relationship, doesn’t have a good communication with his son.
We can see this quote on page 2, “He did not want to mention money before his father. He would do much better by cornering his mother when she was alone. He looked at his father uneasily out of the edge of his eye.”
This quote shows us that Dave afraid of his father, he didn’t ask his father about money, if he ask him about money to buy a gun, his father would be mad and beat him.

Dave’s Father: is a person strict and bad father because he not try to have a good relationship with his son. we can see this in the quote on page 2 where he said “ ‘Waal, yuh oughta keep yo mind on whut yuh doin.’ ‘Yessuh.’"This quotes shows us that Dave’s father is bossy and have bad relationship with him. In conclusion if there is no communication and trust with a child can not have a good relationship between father and son.
