Quote Sandwiches about Characters
This week we are going to analyze the characters in Shabanu by Suzanne Fisher Staples, as we know them in the beginning of the novel. We will continue doing this over the next weeks, to see how the characters change.
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 7: "Shabanu Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating four quote sandwiches, one for
Write one full paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Shabanu is ________________ because __________." This should be about 2-3 sentences long.
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from the story that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character. Again about 2-3 sentences long.
When you are finished, post your quote sandwiches to our blog.
Shabanu is an impatient person that likes to expend time with her father because she they have a good time together working with the camels. We can see this in the quote on page 5 where it says “I secretly count the hours until we leave for Sibi! It will be just Dadi and me and the camels.” This quotes shows us that she likes to be with her father and work with the camels.
ReplyDeletePhulan is a thirteen year old girl that is going to get married at that very young age because her parents organize an arrange marriage for her. We can see this on page 2 where it says “Mama sits with yards of yellow silk in her lap, stitching one of Phulan’s wedding dresses.” this means that the mother is fixing the dress for the marriage that they organized.
Dadi is a man of the desert. He is known for having the best camels in the Cholistan desert. We can see this on page 5 where it says “Ous camels are always the finest at the fair, and Dadi is a good businessman. This quote shows us that Dadi knows how to raise a good camel and that they are the best in the Cholistan desert because he dedicates time to take care of them.
Mama is a wise woman. She and Dadi want their daughter to get married. We can see this on page 6 where it says “Last year we went to Mehrabpur for Mama and Dadi to discuss the marriage with Hamir’s mother. This quote shows us that they organize an arrange marriage between Phulan an Hamir and they want the to get married as soon as possible.

ReplyDeleteShabanu is very wild and kind because she is the daughter of the wind and she loves her sister.We can see this in the quote on page 6, "How i’ll miss you next winter!” I say. “It will be so cold without you under the quilt.” I regret the words the second they're out. Phulan’s moods are fragile. This quotes shows us that shabanu and her sister have live together for many year, and phulan is going to marry to a man, and she will live with the man shabanu is very sad.

We can see this in the quote on page 2, "Phulan walks with her eyes down, her feet shuffling, kicking up puffs of sand that is light as dust. Her name means ‘flower’ and she is beautiful when she smiles." This quotes shows us that phulan is a beautiful girl so many men will to marry her and she is nomad if she get marry with someone she have to leave her family to live with other people.
Mama is virtuous woman because they live in darest so she have to do both housework and outside work.We can see this in the quote on page 3, "Mama pulls at the dough and slaps it into disks. She whirls the flat bread onto the black pan over the fire." This quotes shows us that Mama have to do most things in the family to keep the family alive.
Dadi is a strong man with two daughter because he is strong even he is not taller then mama. We can see this in the quote on page 4, "He is no taller than mama, but his shoulders are broad and the lungi tied around his waist covers the thick muscles of his thighs and buttocks." This quotes shows us that Dadi is very short and strong he must have done many things before.

top slice of bread: mama loves phulan and shabanu so much. she is a caring mother, and she wouldn't trade her daughter for any son.
meat: we can see this in the quote on page 3, “don’t worry, little one,” says mama. “ you and phulan are better than seven sons.”
bottom slice of bread: this quote shows us that mama love her daughters so much.
Dadi
top slice of bread: dadi has trouble in the desert because the sand gets into his eyes, making him uncomfortable.
meat: we can see this in the quote on page 4, “ he rubs his eyes. they are red, irritated by blowing sand.

She loves the desert and the sense of freedom it gives her more than anything in the world. She is free and independent but also compassionate. She chafes under the constraints of the restrictive world around her.
Phulan -
Shabanu's older sister. Phulan is more beautiful and graceful than Shabanu, but she is not as clever, critical, or capable. She and Shabanu have a close relationship, although Shabanu is envious of Phulan's beauty and maturity. Phulan enjoys being indoors and doing housework, and her life centers on her upcoming marriage to her cousin, Hamir.
Mama -
Shabanu and Phulan's mother. she is beautiful, strong, and gentle. She raises her two daughters lovingly and with joy. Mama loves life in the desert as well. She is a wise woman who understands the constraints and challenges of the world in which she lives and bears up under those constraints gracefully.
Dadi -
Shabanu and Phulan's father. Dadi is a man of the desert. He is a skilled herder and is well known for having the best camels in the Cholistan desert. Like Mama, Dadi is a kind and loving parent. He adores his two daughters and raises them to have a sense of freedom and pride. Dadi struggles to do what he can to provide for the future safety and happiness of all his family members, especially his daughters.

ReplyDeleteShabanu is poor because she is a nomad ,but she can find the way to be happy . She might be kind of poor right now , but at least she is happy being next to her sister Phulan.
• The quote from the story that tell us a little more about the situation and how is Shabanu on her life . "We can see this in the quote on page 2, “I am Shabanu. Mama says it’s the name of a princess, but my red wool shawl has worn so thin I can see through it”.
• This quote shows us some Irony because Shabanu isn't really a princess ,but at least she can be happy . Shabanu is the youngest in the family and she would like to be happy .
Phulan
"Phulan is young , she likes to have fun and help her sister because when they are together they might not be bored and they can keep talking about things. Although she lives in the desert , she can find they way to have some fun with Shabanu".
• The quote from the story shows us that it isn't that bad at all living in the desert. "We can see this in the quote on page 4, “Phulan covers her nose and mouth with her shawl, and her eyes tell me she is trying to keep from laughing.”.
• This quote shows us that many good things can happen wherever you are ,the can be good funny and interesting .Being with your family you can be happy and have fun .
Mama
"Mama is a good person , she seems like to be happy when its raining in the desert because at this moment they’re getting water .As it is something they need to live in the desert ,it becomes a reason to be happy and have fun with the family.
• The quote from the story teaches us that with any kind of good signal or reward ,you can be happy and feel good for what is happening .We can see this in the quote on page 8,“ "Are you mad ?"ask Mama . "There is not such a thing as too much water! The toba will be there in the morning and the fuller the better" ”.
• This quote shows us that the rain is something that Mama appreciates a lot . It gives color and a good mood or feeling to everyone.
Dadi
Dadi is happy because as it is raining ... it means that they won’t need to go somewhere else to find water.Also because they can now have some rest and relax under the rain and refresh themselves from the hot temperatures of the desert.
• The quote from the story tell us that whenever it rains in the desert ,it is almost as if you were in Heaven . "We can see this in the quote on page 12, “We can stay perhaps until Phulan’s wedding"”.
• This quotes shows us that rain is one motive to be happy if you’re living in the desert .Also it can mean time to relax and save energy for anything else you’ll need to do .

ReplyDeleteShabanu is a responsibility person because they live in the desert and dry area in the Pakistan and their life was so hard, but Shabanu was their one of the whole family daughter, she was eager offer to help her parents that take care of the baby camel.
The quote from the story that teaches us about this character. We can see this in the quote on page 16, “ I take the baby camel’s face between my hands and his nostrils twitch.”
This quotes show us that she was share the outside works with her parents. She take the camels seriously. she was a little child who always to do a lot of outside works than me when I was a young girl.

This quotes shows us that her appearance looks like the mom closely, She has golden eyes. She was tall. She was look like an adult when she was young person.
Mama is a hardworking person because life in the desert is difficult, she can to do many houseworks.
The quote from the story that teaches us about this character. We can see this in the quote on page 2. “ Her strong brown fingers plucking at the extra silk in the curved bodices. She has made it big enough to fit Phulan when she’s grown.”
This quotes shows us that she can making a lot of things. Like the clothes and pants. She have make the clothes before the sister has grown.
Dadi is polite person because he was treating the guest gently while somebody was coming at home.
The quote from the story that teaches us about this character. We can see this in the quote on page 37. “ Dadi, who has been deferential and extremely polite with the Rangers, throws back his head and laughs loudly.”
This quotes shows us that his personality that is a polite, kinds, and friendly. He looks at the Rangers was so polite and respond other people.

ReplyDeleteShabana is compassionate because she help the baby camel give birth, and after the mother camel died, she takes care for the baby camel. We can see this in the quote on page 16, “I clean the baby with my shawl, trying to ignore the gurgling sounds and the flapping wings behind me. I rub his legs and chest briskly until his soft white fur curls tightly as it dries in the sun. Slowly he becomes more active.” This quote shows us that Shabana is compassionate because she try to help the baby camel didn’t get hurt from vulture and she cleans up the baby camel, and help it to move.
Phulan is older than Shabana because Phulan get married first and then Shabana will get married in next year. We can see this in the quote on page 6, “This year we will go to Mehrabpur for Phulan’s wedding. Next year we will go back for my wedding to Murad.” This quote shows us that Phulan is older than Shabana because Phulan will get married first this year, Shabana will be married next year.
Mama is optimistic because she always laughs, and if someone said something she didn’t want to hear, she will not be angry. We can see this in the quote on page 3, “Don’t worry,little one,” says Mama. ” You and Phulan are better than seven sons.” This quote shows us that Mama is benevolent because she didn’t care about Aunties says the son is better than daughter, even if she need to spend many times to prepare two wedding, she also think daughters are better than son, she is very love her daughters.

Shabanu is a eleven year old girl. She is phulans younger sister. she is more clever than phulan. She helped her mama with housework indoor and outside. She loves to spend time with her camels. She have close relationship with phulan. We can see this in the quote on page 2 “ I am shabanu. Mama says it’s the name of a princess.” This quote shows us that even though shabanu is not a real princess but her dadi and mama kept that name for her because they don’t have any son so she can be happy.

mama- mama is kind of the happy person. mama is happy when there is raining in the deser. we can see that mama is excited about rain. you can be happy and feel good for what is happening’’ this quote tell us that mama is happy about the rain and she is telling everybody about the rain because in desert sometimes its raining and they can get a water.
dadi - dadi is praying for the rain . and she think rain is a blessing in winter we can see this quote on page 7 that ‘’ wake up , she says her voice bubbling. she and dadi have prayed hard for the rain a rare blessing in winter’’.
this quote tell us that dai is praying hard for the rain.

Shabanu is a smart girl and her siblings is Phulan .She loves her pets and her family.She has love for her pets camels and care about them.
The quote that teach us about this character is in the quote on page 16, “ I take the baby camel’s face between my hands and his nostrils twitch.”
The quote show that Shabanu loves camels because she take care it with loves. She is also enjoying holding the camel.
Mama
Mama is Shabanu and Phulan's mother. She loves her daughters and she cares about them too. Mama would make her daughters feel comfortable in some pressure situation.

In this quote show that Mama really does cares about her children and try to make them be respect for themselves.
Phulan
Phulan is Shabanu older sister and she is going to get marry. She is not happy about her nomads lives .

The quote show that She is having a bad time in the desert. She hate that she has to move around for living.
Dadi
Dadi is the leader of the family and is Shabanu and Phulan ‘s father. He loves his family and he has a good maners.
We can see this in the quote on page 37. “ Dadi, who has been deferential and extremely polite with the Rangers, throws back his head and laughs loudly.”
The quote show that he has respect for his guess and by not to show his rudeness to his guess.

We can see this on page 5 where it says “Our camels are always the finest at the fair, and Dadi is a good businessman. This year we'll sell fifteen to pay for Phulan’s wedding.” This quote means that he work hard to his family and he care so much to always be the leader on his family. Although he love her family.

ReplyDeleteShabanu is friendly because she was clean and tender for the baby camel ,like a son of her , We can see this in the quote on page 16,“I clean the baby with my shawl, trying to ignore the gurgling sounds and the flapping wings behind me. I rub his legs and chest briskly until his soft white fur curls tightly as it dries in the sun. Slowly he becomes more active.this quote shows us shabarnu is a very nicely girl ,she does not want the camels baby get hurt and tender to clearn it .
Phulan
phulan is a sad person of the young guy , because she just thirteen years old ,if get marry is a big problem, if phulan think about get a marry when her is young , she can knows get marry is not a goodthing of young people ,on page 2,” “Mama sits with yards of yellow silk in her lap, stitching one of Phulan’s wedding dresses.” this means that the mother is fixing the dress for the marriage that they organized.’’ this quote to shows us phulan mama wants her get marry fast and she wants too.
mama
mama is a good mother and good wife because she does all of housework “We can see this in the quote on page 2,’Her strong brown fingers plucking at the extra silk in the curved bodices. She has made it big enough to fit Phulan when she’s grown.”this quote shows us that some one who is the best mother of shabarnu famliy.

dadi is a hardworking person because he has a lot of energy for tending the camel and he also has muscles. We can see this in quote on page 4, “He is no taller than Mama, but his shoulders are broad and the lungi tied around his waist covers the thick muscles of his thighs and buttocks.” This quote shows us that Dadi is a good man of the family .

Shabanu is a nomad in the cholistan desert between india and pakistan border ,Shabanu have to moving from one place to another in search of food,.we can see this in the quote on page 1,“phulan and i step gingerly through the prickly gray camel thorn, each of us balancing a red clay pot half filled with water on our heads. it was all the water we could get from the toba, the basi that is our main water supply”
bottom. This quote shows us that shabanu is a nomad, she has to get water from a toba, and she use camels to carry it and for a way of transportation.

Phulan is a pretty woman and admirable woman. We can see this in the quote on page 2, "Phulan walks with her eyes down, her feet shuffling, kicking up puffs of sand that is light as dust. Her name means ‘flower’ and she is beautiful when she smiles." This quotes shows us that phulan is a beautiful girl that so many men would like to marry her .she is nomad if she get marry with someone she have to leave her family to live with other nomad people.
Mama
Mom loves Shabanu phulan and therefore she is a loving mother phulan, and she would not trade her daughter for any child.We can see this in the quote on page 3, "do not worry, a little," says Mom. "You and phulan are better than seven sons".This quote shows that mommy loves her daughters while no change to seven children.
Dadi
Dadi is a strong man because he has a lot of energy to care for the camel and foraging. This can be seen in the quote on page 4, "He is not taller than mom, but his shoulders are wide and tied at the waist Lungi covers the thick muscles of the thighs and buttocks." This quote shows that Dadi however that is not higher than the mom is stronger physically.

ReplyDeleteShabanu is worry because she doesn’t want to marry now. Her mother receives Murad’s camels and ready to let her to marry him. We can this in the quote on page 5,” I recently count the hours until we leave for Sibi!” This shows that Shabanu is not really want to marry him. She wants to leave the desert.
Phulan is scary because she is ready to marry her cousin. She cries over night. We can see this in the quote on page 2, “ She laughs, her teeth gleaming in the opal haze of the setting sun. “ This shows that Phulan is laughing, actually she is ready to cry. She is scared.
Mama doesn’t care about what Phulan say, because she only watch at her cousin’s land. We can see this in the quote on page 5, “ Mama rocks Phulan against her.” This shows that Mama is bossy at her. She wants to have the rich land. She does not caring her.
Dadi likes to do something he decide. Nobody can persuade him. We can see this in the quote on page 8, “ Toward evening he announces he will go out to the toba to see how much rain has collected.” This shows that Dadi must done something he decide. He trends to finish everything when he decide to do .

Shabanu is narrator, eleven years old at story. She lives in the Cholistani desert with her family. She is willful and independent , she loves the desert. “ In less than a year you’ll be betrothed. You aren’t a child anymore. You must learn to obe, even when you disagree.”(28) This quote means the dadi was a nice and care of me ,but I didn’t listen to him. I have my own idea to thing about something i know them.
2. Phulan
Phulan is Shabanu’s older sister, she is more beautiful and graceful than Shabanu.Phulan and Shabanu are closes relationship. “Phulan walks with her eyes down,her feet shuffling,kicking up puffs of sand that is light as dust。Her name means“flower,”and she is beautiful when she smiles.”(2) This quote shows Phulan is a beautiful girl and her name have a good mean 。
3.Mama
Mama is beautiful, strong and gentle woman. She raises her two daugthers lovingly. when thair family in the desert, the place don’t have enought water and food can provide foe them. “Are you mad?”asks Mama.” There are no such thing as too much water! The toba will be there in the morning, and the fuller the better.” (8).The quote shows us in the desert they don’t have enought water to life. The life is hard of desert. Mama was care about their life in this place.They want to move to another place to get batter.

Dadi is a nice and strong man,he loves his daughter too much,he work to get money and something for his childs,“Dadi will give us each ten camels with our dowries.” (6) the quote shows us Dadi is a good father,he wark hard for his daughther‘s dowries.

We can see this in the quote on page 2, “I am Shabanu.Mama says it’s the name of a priness,but my red wool shawl has worn so thin i can cee through it.” This quote shows us that Shabanu doesn’t like princess have beautiful cloth and her life is not easy.
Phulan is a pretty girl also she is Shabanu’s sister. She just thirteen years old but she have to marry with Hamir. We can see this in the quote on page 2, “Phulan is thirteen. She will marry our cousin Hamir this summer during the monsoon rains.” This quote shows us Phulan is so young but she gets marry. At the same time,she will leave her family with other people that it will make her unhappy.
Mama is a good mother because she cares her daughter and she have to keep her family. We can see this in the quote on page 3, “She dips her tall, graceful frame through the doorway of our hut and comes out with a large wooden bowl. Squatting before the fire, she kneads water into wheat flour to make chapatis.” This quote shows us that mama have to do many work everyday and she is hardworking for her family.
Dadi is a strong man even though he is short than his wife. We can see this in the quote on page 4,“He is no taller than Mama, but his shoulders are broad and the lungi tied around his waist covers the thick muscles of his thighs and buttocks.” This quote shows us Dadi has power because he has muscles of his thighs and buttocks.Also, Dadi is a important man in their life because his family dependent on him.

This means that they both of them have been live together for many years and also Pulan is going to marry a man.After married they gonna be live together with each other.Shabanuis getting very sad for it.

Phulan is very famous because she is very favorite in the eyes of mama’s.One quote from page2 is that “ Phulan walks with her heads down, her feet shuffling, kicking up puffs of sand that islight as dust. Her names means “flower”, and she is beautiful when she smiles”. This meansshe is very beautiful but she can’t fall in love with other people whoever she loves because thatshe is nomad. Her family is responsible for her married and where they want she has to marry with that person.

She lives on the desert so she needs to on both sides. She has to work on house and also workon outside. Dadi
Dadi is a man of the desert. He is a skilled herder and is well known for having the best camels in the Cholistan desert. Like Mama, Daddy is a kind and loving parent. He adores his two daughters and raises them to have a sense of freedom and pride. Dadi struggles to do what he can to provide for the future safety and happiness of all his family members, especially his daughters.
Mama
Mama top slice of bread: mama loves phulan and shabanu so much. she is a caring mother, and she wouldn't trade her daughter for any son.

This quotes shows us that phulan was treated like a queen because it was the largest in the house. Also because she will marry with her cousin Hamir.

Phulan’s an adolescent who really different than others she is very loveable because in the eyes of her mother as we can see in the quote “ Phulan walks with her heads down, her feet shuffling, kicking up puffs of sand that islight as dust. Her names means “flower”, and she is beautiful when she smiles”page;2. This means that Phulan is very loveable to everyone eyes and she is beautiful enough.

Dadi
dadi is bossy he does things weather he wants nobody can persuade him. This show us that, father is the one who guide things and has more power than everyone else.
