Quote Sandwiches about Characters
This week we are going to continue to analyze the characters in Shabanu by Suzanne Fisher Staples, as we know them in the second section of the novel. We will continue doing this over the next weeks, to see how the characters change.
In Google Docs, create a document called Blog 8: "Shabanu Character Quote Sandwiches"
You will be creating four quote sandwiches, one for
Write one full paragraph for each character, as a quote sandwich, following this structure:
•Top slice of bread = your thoughts, beliefs and ideas about the character. "Shabanu is ________________ because __________." This should be about 2-3 sentences long.
•In the middle is the meat = the quote from the story that teaches us about this character. "We can see this in the quote on page ___, "...."".
•Bottom slice of bread = “this quotes shows us that…” Concluding sentences, again proving what you believe about this character. Again about 2-3 sentences long.
When you are finished, post your quote sandwiches to our blog.
Shabanu is a wild young girl because when she angry she bite her father just for he sell guluband.We can see this in the quote on page 61, "Dadi catches me halfway between the tent and guluband, and he scoops me up in one arm. Ikick at him and beat at the air.". This quotes shows us that Shabanu is very angry about Dadi sold the guluband she want to kill him.
ReplyDeleteDadi is very care about Shabanu and all he did is for Shabanu to live better because Shabanu is his daughter, there are no father don't want their children live good.We can see this in the quote on page 54, "shabanu, we could be very rich in another week. You and Phulan would have fine weddings and dowries that would stand you well for the rest of your lives.". This quotes shows us that Dadi sold all animals for get dowries for Shabanu and Phulan he don't want to sell them but he have to.
Grandfather was once a great warrior because he always mentions when he was young he fight for his horde.We can see this in the quote on page 7, "grandfather tells stories about his days as a great warrior in the army camel corps of the nawab of bahawalpur.". This quotes shows us that grandfather was a great warrior or he is just telling the stories.

"Shabanu is confused because she doesn’t understand what her father writes with the stick in the sand .She would like to know what he is writing and also give a little more of her help to Dadi ." •In this quote we can see that Sabanu is curious about certain things. "We can see this in the quote on page 54, "Dadi nods. he is drawing figures in the dirt by the fire with a stick. Mama has taught me the little reading she knows, but i can’t make out what he’s writing."".This shows us that Shabanus wills to help her father and understand a little more about what does he writes about .
Grandfather
"Grandfather is a calm person because there we can see that he stays in a place just looking up at his surrounding .We could say that Dadi would like to be with him " • This can tell us a little about how Dadi feels about his Grandfather . "We can see this in the quote on page 71, "I leave the shop and walk down the crowded lane to another, where an old man who reminds me of my Grandfather sits peacefully on his floor, staring out into the daylight, He starts when he sees me , staring as if he’s seen a ghost. "" ......
Sharma
"Sharma is bold because of that a lot of men don’t talk with her. It looks like as she get angry easily " • People can see somebody on one way ,but other people might see it in a different way . "We can see this in the quote on page 98, "Sharma is bold and outspoken. Most men don’t like her and are afraid of her. Not dadi .He thinks she’s wonderful""......
Dadi
"Dadi is strong and patient because he do his work and whatever he needs without caring about how much time it will take." • In the story we can see Dadi as who takes care of the money that needs the family. "We can see this in the quote on page 43, "Dadi and one of our new companions climb slowly up the rocks , their hands open, palms up in humble greeting."". This shows us that Dadi always try to do his work and roll in the family . Even if it is difficult he will try it and find out how could he solve the situation .

Bottom slice of bread: “this quote shows us that Shabanu has good relationship with Guluband, his Dadi wants to sell Guluband, but she doesn’t let her father sell Guluband.”
Grandfather
Top slice of bread: “Grandfather is kind, because he has take care of Shabanu and Phulan.”
In the middle is the meat: “We can see this in the quote on page 79, “‘Shabanu?’ he says, a long-toothed smile spreading under his white mustache. ‘You’ve grown a foot.’”
Bottom slice of bread: “this quote shows us that grandfather is kind, however he not recognize her, but Shabanu is his granddaughter.”
Sharma
Top slice of bread: “Sharma is a bold woman, because she is different with other woman.”
In the middle is the meat: “We can see this in the quote on page 98, “Sharma is bold and outspoken. Most men don’t like her and are afraid of her. Not Dadi. He thinks she’s wonderful.”
Bottom slice of bread: “this quote shows us that Sharma is a different woman with others. So, some men afraid her, but some men thinks she is wonderful, like Dadi. ”
Dadi
Top slice of bread: “Dadi is a father, a father wants his daughter follow the rules, because he is Shabanu’s father, he know Shabanu doesn’t wants to follow the rules, but she need to follow the rules.”
In the middle is the meat: “We can see this in the quote on page 44, “‘You know, little one,’he says, ‘these men will kill the woman when they find her.’”
Bottom slice of bread: “this quote shows us that Dadi wants his daughter follow the rules, however she doesn’t feel happy, he only wants his daughter follow the rule, and live a long time.”

ReplyDeleteShabanu is scared because her dad told her that the men who is looking for a women , when he find out them he will kill the women.we can see this in the quote on page 43-44,”’we are looking for my brother’s daughter .she has eloped with a Marri tribesmen.If you are not protecting her ,then you can go in peace,and God go with you.’” this quote shows us that if they protect that women when they find out her with them ,they will kill all of them. This let Shabanu feel scared and first time she want to obey the rules because she does not want to die.
Dad is a person who really takes care of his daughter’s life in future ,because he also does not want to sell the Guluband but if he did ,Shabanu and Phulan can rest of their life after.we can see this in the quote on page 54 “‘Shabana, we could be very rich in another week.you and Phulan would have fine weddings and dowries that would stand you well for the rest of your lives.’”This quote shows us dad for the sake of his daughter , he wants to earn more money for their future’s life.
Grandfather is affable person, because he likes talked about stories to Shabanu and Phulan. we can see this in the quote on page 7 “Grandfather tells stories about his days as a great warrior in the Army Camel Corps of the Nawab of Bahawalpur. his thin ,wrinkled face is animated,his eyes lively.”this shows us that he likes parents to tell a story to their child and enjoy it together .

Grandfather is patriotic because he had been to be a soldier and joined into the war which was defending the desert against the Rajput princes from India.He always tells his stories to Shabanu and Phulan.on pag We can see this in the quote 7,“Dadi brings us camel harnesses to mend,and Grandfather tells stories about his days as a great warrior in the Army Camel Corps of the Nawab of Bahawalpur.” thatThis quotes shows us Grandfather got honor by himself from joined into the war to protect his homeland.So he loves to tell stories about the war to people.

Dadi is traditional because he belives in the culture of his country.He think everyone should must abide by the rules.We can see this in the quote 44,“I dont answer.He is reminding me that I must abide by the rules.”This quotes shows us that Shabanu believes Dadi told her the woman will be killed because of he wants to remind Shabanu not to escape her wedding next year.However,Shabanu is unhappy to Dadi.
Shabanu is a girl who cares about animals and take of her family because when her father gonna sale the Guluband, she feels so sad about it.

Dadi is a man who cares about family and a good businessman, but he did things in wrong ways. Because he sales Guluband and he lied to Shabanu.
We can see this in the quote on page61, “I bite at him like a wild animal. With his free hand he slaps my face, sending me to my knees. He still holds my arm.”
This quotes shows us that Shabanu’s father sale the camel, and he lie to Shabanu. Even he was cares about his family but he did in wrong ways.
Grandfather is a really good man with is he loves Shabanu and feel so sad about Dadi sales Guluband. Because he was mourns with Shabanu.
We can see this in the quote on page80, “The tears come slowly, leaking out over my cheeks, down my chin and neck. I weep quietly, Grandfather patting my hand the whole time.”
This quote shows us that grandfather is a nice friendly man, he was take cares about Shabanu and feel so sad about what happened on Guluband.
Sharma is a really funny woman and who really Confident about future. Because she was taking with mami and laughing.
We can see this in the quote on page 103, “We hear Sharma’s deep, husky voice laughing and talking, calling out to woman camped around us and moving animals from her pathe long before we see her.
This quote shows us that Sharma is really funny woman she really confident about future.

ReplyDeleteShabanu didn’t want to sell Guluband, because Guluband had playing with her for a long time, she has a lot of emotions for Guluband. We can see this in the quote on page 54, “He smiles, but his eyes are sad, and I have an empty feeling in my stomach that presses outward as if I’ll burst.” This quote shows us that Shabanu feels very sad when she heard they need to sell Guluband to get money, because she gets Guluband for a long time, she didn’t want to let him sell it. If they do that, she will be burst.
Grandfather is amiable, because he likes to tell children the stories about the time when he was young. ReplyDeleteShabanu is gentle girl because she feeds the animals and prepare tea give to buyers after Guluband and she come back with the fodder. She really worry about this traveling companion who is camped next to them. We can see this in the quote on page 50. “I feed the animals, all the while running back to be sure that the tea kettle is full and that the prospective buyers have tea.” This quotes shows us that she’s graceful and she understand that how does she to do. And she offer to help Dadi. She was still doing her best what she can do in this travel.
Grandfather is friendly because when she tells him about seeing Derawar and thinking of him there and about the Bugtis, the carnival, the Afghan Wardak, the celebration, the trip back, the remarkable man in the bazaar at rahimyar khan, and the shatoosh. she cried softly. The Grandfather try to comfort hers. We can see this in the quote on page 80. “ I weep quietly, Grandfather patting my hand the whole time.” This quote shows us that even though she has not seen the grandfather a long time ago, she is very miss to him. He was listened to her carefully that he as an audience. He make her be quiet and feel save.
Dadi is a funny person because he was singing and talking to the camel. Also talking to the puppy. Even though the animals does not have communication ability, he always try to contact with her friends, the animals. We can see this in the quote on page 70. “ He walks along, singing in his husky voice, and sometimes talks to the camel, sometimes to the puppy. This quote shows us that he treats the animals like his friends, be friendly. And he enjoy the time with the animals. That does his funny.
->Shabanu is a good person because she loves her family , she doesn’t want to marry with a people that she doesn’t know who is, and no love. We can see this in the quote on page 56 she says “ I have no money , i know nobody outside my family . I have no choice but to obey Dadi and hope the afghan won’t pay that price for the whole herd.” This quote show us that her father doesn’t give a money to her and she doesn't know other person of other places. this character has a life very tied for your culture and religion...

We can see this in the quote on page 80 he says “ He covers my hand with his to make me be quiet and tilts my chin up so I’m looking into his kind, old eyes.” This quote show us that is a respectable man and they have to obey. he like to have a good relationship with the children. he like to talk with the children about the good and bad time in the past.
Dadi is a religious person, He is a strong man, but kind. He dotes on Shabanu until she gets older. we can see this in the quote in page 56 “Dadi look at me and there is compassion in his eyes. i know i must remain in Dadi’s good graces .. it’s my only hope.” this show us that Dadi is a restrict person and he like that other respect him. He want that his daughter follow the rule of his religion.
Shabaun is a good person because she doesn’t want to sell the Guluband and if her father sell it, she will be upset. We can see this in the quote on page 61 ““N-o-o-o-o-o-o”I scream,running at wardak though the rain.” This quote shows us that Shabanu was said no about selling the Guluband

Guluband is a renowned because a lot of people wanna buy him for a highest prices. We can see this in the quote on page 45, “ I am numb. Last year at Sibi Dadi refused all offers for Guluband.” This quote shows us that Guluband having get a lot of offers from Dadi of another people, they wanna buy its but Dadi doesn’t sell its, Dadi refused all of the offers.

Shabanu is a kind person, because she loves the camels very much and she doesn’t want to her dad to sell the camel. On page 61,"”Guluband!”I shout. Gulaband is very important for this family, Dad wants to sell it and Shabanu does’t want it .in page 45”we may be poor, but we love our animals,’says Dadi.”why else would we live in the desert?” from this quote,we can know that Gulaband become the most important thing in this family ,but in the end,Dadi still sell it and lied to

Dadi
Dadi is a religious person, he believes Allah, he thinks god will help them in their lives. He always look up for his religion and pray when he has a kind of issue. We can see this in the quote on page 49, “I just know that whatever Allah wills, it will be so. And there’s no reason to be afraid, because what Allah wills cannot be changed.” This quote shows us that Dadi is a religious person because he thinks Allah fix all the problems for them, so they didn’t need to be afraid in their lives. He always pray for Allah for his own goods.
Guluband
Guluband is a camel that Shabanu been raising from he was little. Dadi want to sell Guluband for a good price. We can see this quote on page 33 “”Hunteray” says Dadi, Guluband shakes his great shaggy head and steps out, and our little caravan is under way.” This quote show that Dadi has been training Guluband for a long time. He want to sell Guluband by a good price. Guluband is a kind and obey to the owner.

•Top slice of bread = Shabanu loves Guluband so much. Even she knows that they’ll earn a lot of money selling Guluband, she still prefers to be poor with Guluband. She also cares of what the buyers might do with her camel.
•In the middle is the meat = We can see this in the quote on page 63, “But at the center of my self is an aching hole. With Guluband, my joy, my freedom, all of who I am has gone. I wonder if I will ever take pleasure in anything again.
•Bottom slice of bread = This quotes shows us that Shabanu really loves Guluband. We could see how devastated she is after her father sold Guluband.
Dadi
•Top slice of bread = Dadi loves Guluband, but he loves his daughters more. He sold Guluband so he could afford Phulan to have a good wedding.
•In the middle is the meat = We can see this in the quote on page 54, ““You and Phulan would have fine weddings and dowries that would stand you well for the rest of your lives.” He smiles, but his eyes are sad....”
•Bottom slice of bread = This quotes shows us that Dadi sold Guluband for his daughters. He was sad about it, but he sacrifice him for her daughters.
Guluband
•Top slice of bread = Guluband is the finest camel in the Sibi. A lot of people offer to buy him for a really good price. He dances good, and is very useful.
•In the middle is the meat =We can see this in the quote on page 45-46, "Last year at Sibi Dadi refused all offers for Guluband. He danced, showing off at the gentlest urging. He stood a head taller than the thousands of other camels at the fair. Everyone had to agree he was the finest camel at Sibi."
•Bottom slice of bread = This quotes shows us that Guluband is a really special camel. He is different from the other camels which is why people notice him and wanted to buy him. He dances good too.

Guluband is a camel and is shabanu’s favourite animals. He is very attractive than other camel. In Quote” He danced, showing off at the gentlest urging. He stood a head taller than the thousand of other camel at the fair. Everyone had agreed that he is the finest camel of sibi.”pg-46. This quote shows us that guluband is very attractive camel and he is one of the best camel of the sibi.

Guluband is a listener,because when Shabanu feels sad,angry,happy,or any feeling,she all will stay with Guluband and talk to Guluband even she wouldn’t get any reply. We can see this in the quote on page 63 “But at the center of my self is an aching hole.With Guluband. my joy, my freedom,all of who i am has gone.”This quote show us that the Guluband kind like Shabanu’s all hope,it like Shabanu’s dream,when Guluband is got sell,it’s kind like make Shabanu lost all the things come from her inside.

Dadi is a funny person because he was singing and talking to the camel. Also talking to the puppy. Even though the animals does not have communication ability, he always try to contact with her friends, the animals. Dadi tells them he isn’t for sale.” This quote shows us that many people are interest for Guluband, and they want to buy him. But Dadi grudge him, it means Dadi likes him. So Guluband is attractive.

Dadi is a good father. Because he does everything is good for his daughter. We can see this in the quote on page 63, “From the sale of fourteen camels, Dadi has made enough for Phulan’s wedding and dowry and for mine next year.” This quote shows us that the reason of Dadi sell the Guluband is for makes enough money to give Phulan a wedding and dowry. So Dadi is a good father.

This shows us that shabanu don’t want her dadi to sell guluband but for the dowries money they have to. Shabanu thinking to take guluband away but she can’t because she must abide by the rules.
Grandfather
=> Shabanu’s grandfather is a great warrior. He fought for the army camel corps of the nawab of bahawalpur. He tells shabanu and phulan stories about how he defended the desert from the rajput princes from India. We can see this in the quote on page 7 “ His thin wrinkled face is animated , his eyes lovely. Usually he is half-asleep, and we are happy to hear his voice, rough as the windblown sand, telling stories of defending the desert from the rajput princes from India”. This shows us that shabanu’s grandfather was a great warrior. He is too old but he is half-asleep all day when he tells shabanu and phulan stories.

=> Sharma is a female cousin of shabanu’s mama and dadi. She has a daughter named fatima. Sharma left her husband because he abused her. Sharma now raising goats and sheeps in the desert. She is strong and wise.
Dadi
=> Shabanu and phulan’s father. He is thin, strong, and Dadi is a man of the desert. He is a hard working man. Dadi loves his family.Dadi can do anything for his daughters. We can see this on page 75 “ God has been very good to us, and i’m not sorry about anything”. This shows us that dadi loves his daughters and he doesn’t regret about anything. He is thankful to god.

I think this means that Guluband loved Shabanu because he is been for several years with her.He also feel sad because he has an idea that he will be sold by Shabanu’s father.
Dadi
Dadi is a hardworking person and responsible for his family because he love his family and care about their ,he want the best for them. We can see this in quote on page 44 , “ “My daughter is the only female with us, and she is just child “says Dadi, his voice calm” This quote shows us that Dadi is a good man of the family .Also we can see that Dadi care about his family in whatever situation.I feel good because her Dadi defends to his daughter in from other people.
