    Dear Ms.Fisher Staples,

My name is qianhong huang,I come from China, and i have been America about two and half years. Now I’m 11 grade in New Comers H.S .This master i read the novel of your wrote ----Shabanu.I writing this letter to you because i think this book is interesting and also i have some question .

This book is very interesting ,it meant to me growing up is difficult and traditional. I have some simile as Shabanu has,for example, when she knows that she will get marry with Rahim and Phulan will marry with Murad ,she feels sad and angry ,she wants to against her parents, but if she did that would be more problems in front of her. Also when she ask her mom for reason , her mom just tell her that she was too young all things they did is good for her. From page 192 “Shabanu ,you are still young. You aren’t even of age yet . You have another six months, perhaps a year,to get used to the idea.” we can see now have many parents thinks they children are too young and can not think very good ideas for themselves,so they all decide for them. I’m the one of them, i like to disobey my parents. if they do something that i do not agree with , sometime they just say and do it ,they do not tell me ,it let me angry ,but i do not have choice, only do it .i can understand what she feeling and thinking. After this read i saw again what is before happen to me during growing up.In the novel ,i saw Shabanu confusing and frighted.her parents tell her that she should knows how to protect families and everythings are not easy contol.

I want to know how is you feeling about the arrange marriage , and what is ending of your story in your heart? About Shabanu this untraditional girl , do you agree or disagree with?

Thanks for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,

    Dear Ms. Fisher Staples,

My name is Jing Jiang, I came from China, and I have been live in U.S for more than 3 years. Now I’m 11 grade, in this semester, I just finished reading your novel, Shabanu, in my ESL class.

This book is very interesting, and I like this novel, because it make me have a lot of feeling and reflection for my own life, also it tells me as we grow, our life will become difficult. When I read this novel, I have same feeling with Shabanu. For example, when her Dadi tried to sell Guluband, she felt very sad, because she has Guluband for a long time. When I read this part, I also felt sad, even if I never had a pet, but I know it is hard to leave same thing you had for a long time. Also, I feel sad about Shabanu’s marriage, Shabanu is poor, she loves Murad, but she can’t get marry with him, because Hamir died, he needs to get marry with Phulan, and then Shabanu needs to get marry with an very old man to survive her family. She didn’t want to get marry with him, but she didn’t have choice, her parent didn’t listen what she said, and always let her obey them. This two examples tell me how did Shabanu’s life become difficult, and everything get change as times passed. We can see this idea on page 95: “So much is changing, and I’m only just noticed. Like a breeze gathering strength, all of us - animals and humans - are growing up.” This quote can tells me life is become confusing, because when people are growing up, everything is new for them. It also happen in my life, I also disobey with my parent, and when I was growing older, my life is more difficult and challenging, because I didn’t have those experiences.

I want to ask you what's your feeling about arrange marriage, and why would you let Shabanu get married with an very old man?

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,

    Jing Jiang

This book is very confusing but I like this novel. It makes me get many feeling in my own life and it tells us life is not easy to change. When I read this novel, I have same feeling with Shabanu. For example,I feel upset about Shabanu’s marriage becuase Shabanu is wind. Why her family force her marry with old man and she loves Murad. She has her love but they can not marry. It is so unjust for Shabanu. She doesn’t want to get marry with him, but she didn’t have choice. Her family doesn’t care she’s feeling and wants her obey them. This examples tell me even though we don’t want to do but we don’t have choose that also we have to accept. We can see this quote on page 192 “Shabanu ,you are still young. You aren’t even of age yet . You have another six months, perhaps a year,to get used to the idea.”This quote can tells me if you so younger that you have to obey with your family even you don’t want that.In my life, I also disobey my mom when I go to play, but my mom care me and she would for my sake. So,I feel I have warm family with me.
Why you let Shabanu get marry with old man?
