This week we are going to begin reading a poem called "On Turning Ten" by poet laureate Billy Collins.
Here is the poem being read aloud and the words are written below. When you click on the link, a short commercial will play. Then fast forward the video to 16:50 to hear just the poem "On Turning Ten" being read aloud by the poet.
On Turning Ten by Billy Collins
The whole idea of it makes me feel
like I'm coming down with something,something worse than any stomach ache
or the headaches I get from reading in bad light--
a kind of measles of the spirit,
a mumps of the psyche,
a disfiguring chicken pox of the soul.
You tell me it is too early to be looking back,
but that is because you have forgotten
the perfect simplicity of being one
and the beautiful complexity introduced by two.
But I can lie on my bed and remember every digit.
At four I was an Arabian wizard.
I could make myself invisible
by drinking a glass of milk a certain way.
At seven I was a soldier, at nine a prince.
But now I am mostly at the window
watching the late afternoon light.
Back then it never fell so solemnly
against the side of my tree house,
and my bicycle never leaned against the garage
as it does today,
all the dark blue speed drained out of it.
This is the beginning of sadness, I say to myself,
as I walk through the universe in my sneakers.
It is time to say good-bye to my imaginary friends,
time to turn the first big number.
It seems only yesterday I used to believe
there was nothing under my skin but light.

But now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,
I skin my knees. I bleed.

1. My favorite line of the poem is: “If you cut me I could shine.” The poet shows how helpful is the positive way of thinking that young people have. Young generations have the power to keep going and look for something good in everything bad that happens in their life.
2. When I was ten my favorite things were kind a same as today. I was always playing soccer and dreaming about it. During the day I would play and practice eighter alone or with my team and at night when I would sleep I would dream to become a professional player somewhere in the World.
3. The poet feels like he is going to lose his dreams and lost of other things he had grew up with as soon as he turns first big number. He’s remembering all those things he used to be when he was younger and he tries to keep them but on the other hand he’s got to let them go.
4. I wish that I could still go to my school and have all my friends together, after school come beck home and surprise my parents with good grades... sometimes just wait for the end of the school day and then go home running to hug them and be with my younger brother.

ReplyDeleteI think Linda was depressed cause her boyfriend broke up with her, he was cheating on her in her own eyes but also 1 year before that her brother died. Yes she was isolated from her family at that time.
Who helped her?
The ones that helped her were her mom and the doctor.
What did she do to help herself?
To help her self she put all those problems aside and forgot about them but also she keep going and realizing that she did the wrong thing trying to kill herself.

ReplyDelete“but now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,I skin my knees.I bleed’’.I think it’s meaningful for everyone to remember this sentence because this shows the life in the future are very busy . We don’t have time to create and fantasize everything and achieve our dreams.We don’t have any fervour to reach our dreams when we have grown up in the future. Especially ,when we have our own family and children. and in the society we have our own career.
What were your favorite things to do when you were ten?
When I were ten ,my favorite things were that flying in the sky and universe.

When the poet was ten ,he felt sad because he must say good bye to the imaginary friends.However when he was younger,he felf so happy because he could play with the friends in the childhood.I agree with him because when we are growing up, we will have many things to worry . Childhood is a beautiful and fantastic time.we are innocent at our childhood and we don’t have something worried.

I wish i could travel all over the world.

time to turn the first big number.”Because from this quote,it can evoke my memories of my change that from childhood to youth.When I turn to youth,I had to be steady,and I could not say something that is naive.

When I was ten,my favorite thing were playing dolls with my friends and going to the Ocean Park with my parents and younger sister.

Being younger,the life is simple,children just need to play.But being ten,children have to grow up and know how to be a good person.

This is my favorite line in the poem because I did the same thing as he did.It makes me to think about my early life when i used to dress up like a model or sometimes i used to pretend like i am a doctor.It was the most interesting and enjoyable moment in my life.

Ans:-My favorite things to do when i was ten is to play with a lots of dolls,to dress up with a heavy makeup and to pretend like someone i admire of.

Ans:-When the poet was ten, he felt very sad and he thought it was the time to say good-bye to his imaginary friends.I agree because before we are ten life becomes more complicated,we used to loose imaginations of the things that we did in the past and everything become more realistic.

Ans:-I wish i could still believed that the life is too easy,simple,enjoyable and there is no such a big deal in life when I were younger.However,it is different now,I hope that would be true for me.

by drinking a glass of milk a certain way’.”It’s my fevorite line because by this line the author wants to show us that life was so easy for us when we were little sweet kids.There was no tension,no trouble,no struggling to live.We were dependent on our parents.That was the best time of our life.

ReplyDeleteA:"You tell me it is too early to be looking back..." (lines 8-11).In these lines the poet uses a mild hyperbole to show the overreaction of the boy to his tenth birthday and it's somehow funny to see how concerned he is.
