Today we are going to imagine how other characters in the story think and feel.
In Google Docs, please do the following:
1. Think of a time that you wanted to do something but couldn’t or didn’t. Describe the situation and how you felt.
2. Holden takes a cab to the club Ernie's in Chapter 12. He has many experiences there where he doesn't do or say what he is thinking and feeling. Pick one of the characters or objects below, and write what Holden wanted to do or say to this person, but didn’t. Describe the situation, how he felt, and why he didn't do what he wanted to do.
- Horowitz’ the cab driver (81-83)
- Ernie the piano player’s (83-84)
- The funny looking guy or girl (85)
- Lillian Simmons (86-87)
- The navy guy, Commander Blop (86-87)
3. Now pick one person from the list above, and write from his/her point of view. Describe what he/she thinks/feels about Holden or about his/her life. You will have to make an inference about this, because we only read from Holden's point of view.
4. When you are finished, post your answer to our blog.
5. Then read two other posts and write what you liked and what you learned from them.
ReplyDeleteLillian Simmons (86-87):
Holden wanted to say: “Why if you are interesting in my phony brother you don't call him? I think is not necessary to talk with me if you don't want to, I’m only waiting for Ernie. If you going to talk with me, Please can you invite me to take a sit because I'm really tired. Do you think I’m going to be up talking with you? And look I don’t have much time to hang out so, I got to go.
3. Now pick one person from the list above, and write from his/her point of view. Describe what he/she thinks/feels about Holden or about his/her life. You will have to make an inference about this, because we only read from Holden's point of view.
Lillian Simmons (86-87):
She think that Holden likes her because she asked him if he has a date or not. She wanted to be friendly with Holden just because she thought that he would tell his brother that he met her and she was nice.

2) Holden meets someone named Lillian Simmons in the hotel and she was blocking the way while they were talking to each other. He wasn’t in the mood (he wasn’t feeling right). He didn’t want to say that the waiter didn’t like her much, also the Navy guy didn’t like her much, even though he was dating her. And he (Holden) didn’t like her either. He didn’t say it because he didn’t want to hurt her feelings. Also, Holden didn’t want to stay with her because he didn’t feel like it so, in page 87 he says, “I was just leaving. i have to meet somebody”. He said that so he could leave without hurting her feelings.

Lillian Simmons.
She really likes Holden and she wants to know him more. In page 87 she says, “Holden, come join us. Bring your drink”. She was trying to get in good with Holden(Be more friends). I think that she is only doing that so that holden’d tell old D.B. about it.

2. When Holden was in the cab, he started a discussion with the driver, Horwitz, about the lagoon in central park and his curiosity to know what happens with the ducks in the winter. Even though he wanted to have a long conversation and ask more questions he had to hold back because the cab driver was impatient and was starting to get upset.
3. The cab driver’s thoughts:
Why did that boy have so many questions about the ducks in the lagoon? What a moron!
He should be in bed instead of hanging around at night and going somewhere. What does these teenagers have in their heads nowadays? I shouldn’t care about that anyway. Actually, where did the ducks go in the winter? Is it true that the fishes are alive in freezing ice?

Dear Jesuka and Luisa,
We think that your comments were really interesting, especially, where Holden says, "If you are going to talk with me, please can you invite me to take a sit because I'm really tired.
Question 3,we have diferent opinion about lillian thoughts because we think that she really loved Holden instead of sayin that Holden likes her.

Holden takes a cab in order to get to Ernie. He kind of starts conversation with the taxi driver who’s name was Horowitz’. Holden says that Horowitz’ was much better taxi driver then the one he had before. After a while Holden asked him if he knows about the ducks in the Central park. The driver doesn’t answer on Holden’s question directly and he started telling him about the fish and what happens when they die. He asked Holden would mother nature take care of him in the winter if he was a fish or it would just let him die, Holden says that mother nature would help and Horowitz’ tells him that he is right and drives away. Holden was afraid if he keep talking and asking questions the driver would get crazy. Holden wanted to tell Horowitz’ that he is a touchy guy and whatever you say makes him sore and he starts to think about it.
Horowitz’ felt that Holden asked too many questions and was kind of annoying. Horowitz’ thought that Holden wasn’t the best student because he was going out late at night and he was thinking that Holden is stupid because he asks taxi drivers about the ducks in Central park. Horowitz’ felt that Holden didn’t get what he was saying so before he left he emphasis again the meaning of the fish and mother nature.

ReplyDelete2.Holden would say to Horwitz that he is insanity because how he can say that ducks can stay in a frozen solid lagoon when is winter time. thats something impossible. Also Holden thinks Horwitz is phony, because Holden knows Horwitz is sore. Even though Holden think Horwitz is not bad, he does not like him. And Holden just talks about joke, but Horwitz is very serious about that, that is so stupid. Horwitz is the touchiest guy Holden even met, everything you said made him sore.
3.Horwitz thinks holden is stupid because he is talking about stupid things, such like where were ducks go in the wintertime. Probably Horwitz thinks Holden has some mental problems because he thinks Holden is acting like a little kid asking those annoying questions.

And he felt sorry for her because he thinks nobody really like her even her date.

When Holden is in the Ernie’s,he meets Lillian Simmons. She tries to have a conversation with Holden and always asks Holden something, but Holden does not want to talk to her angymore and he said he would leave. From that we can see Holden does not like her and stay with her.And he also thinks that nobody likes her, even though she had dating or that kind of things.
Lillian Simmons likes holden and she always talks to Holden and wants to get attentions from him.She think Holden is a nice guy and she wants to know about Holden. She also thinks that she was a nice person and everybody would like her, of course Holden did.

The funny looking guy or girl
When Holden was in Ernie’s club, Some people which he called” Funny looking guy and funny looking girl”, were sitting right to his left and they were having a conversation .Holden felt really sorry for the funny looking guy because he didn’t know how to make a girl have a good time. Holden wanted to say to the funny looking guy that what he’s saying is not interesting. That funny looking girl wasn’t interested and she was kind of bored. He wanted to say to the funny looking guy that he’s a jerk and he doesn’t know how to make a girl have a good time on a date. But he didn’t say nothing because he was afraid the funny guy might blame him for intervening in their conversation.
The funny looking guy was thinking that their conversation was so interesting that Holden was interested in. He thought Holden had nothing to do in his life and the only thing he does is sneak around, listen to people’s conversation and perhaps go to tell other people. He had nothing else to do beside wander around.

2-Houwitz’ the cab driver;
‘’Oh’’ I said. I let it drop. I was afraid he was going to crack the damn taxi up or something.Besides, he was such a touchy guy, it wasn’t any pleasure discussing anything with him.’’
Holden thought that the cab driver was a touchy guy and it wasn’t any pleasure discussing anything with him, the confusing thing is Holden cared about the taxi driver he asked him while he asked him to drink something somewhere, which shows that Holden had a lot to tell the driver but he couldn’t
3-Lillian Simmons

1. Think of a time that you wanted to do something but couldn’t or didn’t. Describe the situation and how you felt.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in Grade 2,one of my classmates lost a watch in the classroom. My teacher said that I stole it.In fact,I didn’t.But my teacher never listen to me.She said she sure that I am the thief. So I just give up to defend for myself.I felt angry and wronged.
2.Holden takes a cab to the club Ernie's in Chapter 12. He has many experiences there where he doesn't do or say what he is thinking and feeling. Pick one of the characters or objects below, and write what Holden wanted to do or say to this person, but didn’t. Describe the situation, how he felt, and why he didn't do what he wanted to do.
The character I want to choose is Ernie the piano player. When Ernie was playing piano,Holden thought that Ernie is phony and likes to show off.But he didn’t say that to Ernie.Because Holden thought that wasn’t all his fault.
3. Now pick one person from the list above, and write from his/her point of view. Describe what he/she thinks/feels about Holden or about his/her life. You will have to make an inference about this, because we only read from Holden's point of view.
Horowitz’ the cab driver.
Horowitz:That night,Holden is the person who I set out.He asked me several stupid questions about the ducks.I guess that he gets in some trouble.Maybe there is some problems between his family and him.Or he just ran away from the school. Otherwise he could not still out so late and invite me to drink.I think he felt very lonely.
Dear Yanxi,
ReplyDeleteI like your post, because I agree with your thoughts.I learned that why Holden didn't say to Ernie that he is phony is because Holden did not want to say something sad that was bad for his job.
Dear Daniel,
ReplyDeleteI like your post.because I know more characters about Holden from your ideas.
Dear Corayma
ReplyDeleteI like your posts. It tell us the details about the story. And we can learn something from different ways.
Dear Mohammed
I like yours .It really express the real thoughts about Holden.
1. Think of a time that you wanted to do something but couldn’t or didn’t. Describe the situation and how you felt.
ReplyDeleteAns:- When I came to USA, I wanted to have network in my desktop or pc but I couldn’t because of my mom. She told me that if i have net in home then I wouldn’t be focus in my study and i would get bad grade in classes. :(

Pick one of the characters or objects below, and write what Holden wanted to do or say to this person, but didn’t. Describe the situation, how he felt, and why he didn't do what he wanted to do.
Ans:- Horowitz’ the cab driver (81-83)
Holden takes a cab to the club Ernie's in Chapter 12. When Holden was in the cab, he kind of starts conversation with the taxi driver who’s name was Horowitz’. Holden says that Horowitz’ was much better taxi driver then the one he had before. After a while Holden asked him if he knows about the ducks in the Central park and his curiosity to know what happens with the ducks in the winter. Even though he wanted to have a long conversation and ask more questions, he had to hold back because the cab driver was impatient and was starting to get angry.
3. Now pick one person from the list above, and write from his/her point of view. Describe what he/she thinks/feels about Holden or about his/her life. You will have to make an inference about this, because we only read from Holden's point of view.
Ans:-Lillian Simmons (86-87)
She think that Holden likes her because she asked him if he has a date or not. She wanted to be friendly with Holden and she wants to know about him more.In page 87 she says, “Holden, come join us. Bring your drink”. She was trying to get in good with Holden. She is only doing that just because she thought that holden would tell old D.B. about it or he would tell his brother that he met her and she was nice.

The navy guy, Commander Blop (86-87)
The navy guy thinks Holden is a unlucky guy because Holden has to talk to Lillian in the crowded club.Commander doesn't like the girl-Lillian has a data with him.He feels angry because Liliian always asks Holden about D.B..He ,maybe think e is better than D.B,when Liliian is surprised about D.B.'s job.
Dear Jess
ReplyDeleteI agree with you.I think the girl-Liliian maybe still loves D.B.,SO she asks Holden questions about D.B..But I think Liliian is not a smart girl, because she asks questions when the person she data with is there.Do you agree?

When Holden was in Ernie’s club, Some people whom he called “Funny looking guy and funny looking girl”, were sitting right to his left and they were having conversation. ReplyDeletei like your comment about the cab driver Horowitz.Holden thinks Horowitz was a touchiest guy ,because he is very irritable. and Holden also is a phony man because he asked Horowitz the stupid question ,then made Horowitz became angry.

ReplyDeleteLast year, my favourite soccer team (panathinaikos) was playing against Olympiakos for the play-offs. It was the season’s best match and I wouldn’t want to miss it at all costs! But, since time came, it was raining so my parents wouldn’t let me go. I felt pretty much overwhelmed at that time , that I didn’t talk to anybody for two days. It was such a painful experience for me. because I really love soccer.

I chose Horowitz the cab driver on pg:81-83: Holden seems to like that person because he thinks he is a very nice guy. What he wanted to say to him was ask him whether he knew where the ducks (symbolise himself) went when it was winter. But, since the taxi-driver was very touchy, he stopped ‘’irritating him’’ and didn’t share his feelings and thoughts with him. The event: Holden asked Horowitz if he happened to know that, but he wouldn’t answer him. Holden felt pretty depressed at that time, and obviously (it is implied) he wanted to avoid talking with him in order to reduce the chances of them crashing their vehicle as the cab driver was driven crazy.
3. Now pick one person from the list above, and write from his/her point of view. Describe what he/she thinks/feels about Holden or about his/her life. You will have to make an inference about this, because we only read from Holden's point of view.
Horowitz’s point of view for Holden: That boy appears to be kind, but why doesn’t he act his age? Does he have psychological problems?I’d sooner not talk to him because who knows what his reaction will be. He asks me too many questions that are quite silly and that’s exactly the reason why I get so much irritated. They are not supposed to have an answer, for goodness sake! How does he expect me to give an answer to them? Who am I, actually? And I don’t even know him, how does he invite a stranger to drink a liquor with him? He must be either mad and crazy or something terrible must have happened to him recently and he can’t come to terms with that fact.
Dear Jess,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, you have done an excellent job. Good for you! What I liked the most in your writing was the way you explained how Lilian might be thinking of Holden and his brother. I lerned that Lilian might not have been so pretty a girl as I thought she was . Thank you for helping me understand that.
Dear Mohammed,
Good work! Although I believe that your comment about Horowitz thinking that Holden was a stupid guy stirs up disagreement. I find that statement toi be completely misinformed. I’m sorry, but I do not really believe that all people have that bad view for minors just because they ask too many questions (even if they are a little bit toddler ones). Take me for example, I do not really think I would have said that.

Ernie the piano player’s (83-84)
Situation: When i came in Ernie, the piano player was playing the piano. All the people ware lousy and shoving before he played. However, after he was playing, the whole people were silent. He made some mistakes while playing. He was putting all these dumb, show-offy ripples in the high notes. And when he finished, everybody was mad and crazy. They clapped their head off and laughed like the morons in the movies that is not funny. And the player also gave a humble, phony row. That’s killed Holden.
Feelings about the player: Holden felt that this is a very phony for the people who listened the music and laughed like hyenas in the movies. He was hate to the humble row. Also he felt sorry about the player when he finished because he did not know where he was wrong or right.
WHY: Because Holden thought he was old and poor that he did not want to say something sad that was bad for his job.
