Week of December 13, Critical Lens Quotes

Today we are going to think about critical lens quotes and practice for the regents.

Read the quotes below. Pick two and in google docs, please do the following:

  1. What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words?
  2. Do you agree or disagree and why?
  3. What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye.
  4. Post your answers to our blog.
  5. Read two other students posts and write a response about what you learned from them.
  • “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein
  • “We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Anais Nin
  • “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
  • “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Maya Angelou
  • “...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

  1. “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

1.I think it means life is following by the rule,if you want to achieve your goal, you need to obey the rule.I agree with it,because the live is not so easy, the rule can help you keep going. In Catcher In The Rye by J.D.salinger,Holden broke all the life rule, like expelled by the school. He feel isolated and depressed about life.He did not follow the rule that make his life more complicated and confusing. In other words, life should be followed by the rule. If not, more challenges you get.

“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

    2. The quote shows the idea that, in life, we’ll always feel sad at some point. However it’s up to us to make a choice of suffering alone or isolated from the rest of the world or to to be surrounded by people that care about us, which would help us get over those bad moments.I agree with the quote because I also believe that everybody has problems and have to face bad times in life at some point. In “Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler, Donny, the main character, was having a lot of problems in schools. His poor relationship with friends and family made him isolate himself and aggravate the problems.

    1) “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

2)“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

1)What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words?

The first quote means that we have to keep moving forward so we don’t fall down into the bad things of life. The second quote means that there are people who like to be accompanied with others, especially when they are going through hard moments, and there are others who really like to spend time alone in order to clear their minds after some hard moments.
2)Do you agree or disagree and why?
I agree with first quote because it tells us that we can’t be influenced by our friends or just do the wrong thing in life because it will bring negative consequences in your life. Also, I agree with the second quote because I really like to spend time alone in order to think or clear my mind among nature.

3)What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye.

(First quote) In the Catcher In the Rye, Dr, Thurmer says, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that you should play according to the rules.” It means that we have to play without making bad decisions and following the “rules”. (Second quote) Holden used to go to Central Park alone in order to spend time with the ducks, which means that he didn’t like to spend time with other as much as going to the park by himself, after Allie died.

    .”
1)i think it means that we have to keep going and dont stop in live until we get our goal
2)”YES”because we have to keep going and going and dont stop and give up
3)as in the catcher in the rye it show is whit the internal conflict that holden has it.Because hoden fell of his bike and because he quit school and he was falling most of his classmates
    4)

(2)“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”―

1)In other words it sais that peope get sad for others and pople who are sad whit themselfs
2)Yes because sometimes we get sad whit ourselfs whit nobody that can listen to us
3)in the catcher in the rye show us thatHolden is struggling because he feel very depressed even he wants to kill himself and he doent want to tell nobody that show us that he prefer to be alone .

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

This means in life, we can’t get success directly. We have to try to get the success by ourselves. We agree with the quote because in life, we have to decide what we want to be. We have read The Catcher in the Rye in this semester could prove the quote. This quote is connected with this story because it use irony as the quote do ,and also how Holden choose to leave from school and go visits bar and all but at the end we can see how he decide for his life.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

We think this means that in life, we have to move on no matter how hard it is because if we don't keep moving forward we will not get the goal we want. We agree with the quote because in life, we have to learn how to look for the future. We have read The Catcher in the Rye in this semester could prove the quote. We can see a connecting with the story because we can see how Holden doesn't move on after his brother’s death and this doesn't permit him to look forward.

Albert Einsein once said ,”Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”it means we have to try our best to do everything in our life to make our life be better.i agree with it because life has a lot of problems,we have to face to solve it ,if not,we will be loser in life.In “teenage wasteland”,Donny didn’t study hard in learning and he disobeyed school’s rules ,it cause him to be expelled by school ,this is external conflict because Donny was struggling with school . he didn’t try his best to study and follow school.he didin’t have goal in life and he didn’t keep on doing everything in life so he became loser..
Nicole Krauss once said ,”..there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”it means someone like to express their emotion, but someone like to hide their emotion.i agree with it because sometimes when we feel sad,we don’t want to affect others mood ,then we hide our emotion. In the catcher in the rye ,the Holden met his history teacher ---ms.spencer.when Holden didn’t want to stay there and he lies to his teacher said “i have to take my gym clothes,so i have to go”,this is external conflict because holden didn’t want to hurt his teacher, but he didn’t want to stay there, then he phony to his teacher to avoid hurting him.holden try to hide his emotion to protect others ‘ emotion.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

1- life has a lot of things that should keep moving, like bicycle if we stop riding it it wont move alone just like life if we stop moving on with it, it’s won’t continue

2- We agree because life is raspy if we stop trying that will make it much harder for us
3-the two literature we may support this statement by are The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger and ‘’teenage wasteland’’ by Anne Tyler
In the Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger ,Holden doesn’t feel concern about his future and he never tried in his life. So he’s stopping the process of his life according to the statement he’s loosing his balance and stopping the riding of the bicycle which represent life
In ‘’teenage wasteland’’ by Anne Tyler, Donny the main character in the story doesn’t really care about school and his family , what he does care about is being where he want so, he’s not keeping his balance and he is suggestible.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
1-The person doesn’t find his personality in life. He must create it according to the people whom he’s dealing with
2-We agree because the personality isn’t findable it is creatable according to the environment
3- the two literature we may support the statement by The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger
In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger, Holden didn’t create his personality according to the people he’s dealing with he called them phony sometimes he doesn’t even like to speak to them also he has a pretty confusing personality he thinks about suicide

Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” I agree with the quote because, in order to make something of your life you have to keep climbing and trying as to essentially achieve your goals. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger proves my opinion on page 39 where it says: “ I slept in the garage the night he died, I broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it.” Main character in the book Holden explains us how he felt when his brother Allie died. He was very mad and angry, but he kept moving and he continue living his life.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

in other words this quote means to me that in order to fit in the society you must know how to treat others otherwise you wont be able to understand others and you will be uncomfortable and apart from others.

I agree with this quote because people should engage to the environment that surround them in order to be find with others.

one part of the book The Catcher in The Rye that prove this quote is when Holden was in the Lavender Room around phony people. He didn't like nobody personality. So He didnt engage with them . He looked everybody defects.

“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

In other words this quote means to me that There are categories of people ones who choose to be disconsolate in front of people and others who choose to suffer in silence.

I agree with this quote because there are plenty of different personalities, people who like to shut up their emotions and suffer in silence and that is something risky that can cause suicide .

One story that prove this quote is The Necklace when Mathilde Loisel borrowed a fake Necklace to her wealthy friend Madame Forestier and she lost it and by the time she had to return it she didn't know how to react and tell the true to her friend and she spent 10 years of her life working to pay for it getting old and suffering that consequences in silence.

We agree with this quote because if we are just sitting there doing nothing and just watching what is going on around us then nothing will change .
    3. What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye.
The Catcher in the Rye prove this quote. Holden failed his four classes but he didn’t try to do something to fix his problem, so then he was kicked out from the school. This shows that if you just stop doing things to improve yourself, you will be not succeed.

1.In life,if we don’t want to lose yourself, we need to look forward , and not stop what we want!
    2. We agree with it.Because when we want to accomplish our goal , we need to keep going, otherwise, as if riding a bicycle,we will drop from it.
3.In Catcher In the Ray, the charter Holden who is a student, his current life focus is study, however, he fails lots of subject and leave the school. He loses himself because he doesn’t go forward of what he wants he just give up and he didn’t even try to keep moving!!..
In “Teenage wasteland”, the charter Donny is a student with horrible behaviors in school and at home.He has his balance when his mother was helping him and all but when she stop he lost his balance and gave up about school,he didn’t care about anything ,so he lost his balance and stop moving.
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
1.Life is about trying to set our own personality instead of looking for it.
2.We agree because in life if you don’t know who you are what you want . We are our own master ,we must manage ourselves.
3.In The Catcher in the Rye we can get a sense that Holden always thinks about other people, such as they are phony, but he never understand himself absolutely.

Nicole Krauss once said “...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”. In other words some people like to share their emotions to others when they feel sad and other like to hide their emotions and ostracized themselves. We agree with this statement because we are all different and it depends on us whether we want to show other people how we’re feeling or how sad we are or hide them and feel lonely. The literature that proves this quote is the poem, “ I AM”. This poem is about a teenager who feel isolated and she has no one to share her emotions with.In this poem, the poet uses imagery of sight to show us how she’s feeling. She feels really sad but no one never sees her cry because she hides her emotions. The poet’s use of imagery of sight shows us that not every body likes to express their feelings to others.

Anais Nin once said, “We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” In other words , things are not always it is,we might put something as we think. We agree with this statement because our mind always control us in a way and sometimes we might think a thing adding our experiences or thoughts. In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D.Salinger, it’s a story about a boy who struggles in life. we can see the author uses internal conflict to show that Holden is struggling with things around him,he always thinks people are phony and he does not like to stay with them.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
” life isn’t about finding yourself . life is about creating yourself .” i think it means we can’t separate to others. we have to show us to others. to show them how successful you are . yes , i agree with it, because the major task for us came to this world is let other persons to know who you are . to make the must beautiful future for self . the novel “the catcher in the rye” prove this quote . in the story ,Holden was expelled by the school , and he never try to get a chance to stay in school, instead , he left the school earlier, and go to bar , smoking ,want to drinking and so on. we can see he has give up his life already.

...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love
“ there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.” i think it means some people can share their everything with others,so they are luck and have a happy life, and the other part of the people always do everything by themselves. they don’t want to together with others so that they isolated by the others.i agree with this quote.because we would get many problems, troubles. but different people has different ways to solve them. a part of the people will ask for help and they can solve the problems more easily and quickly. another part of the people just trying to solve the problems by them selves, so they get hurt , more problems... the novel “the catcher of the rye” prove it. Holden had too many problems in the story . he wasn’t going to get the help and nobody going to help him as well. so it made his life worse than before .

  27. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Maya Angelo

This means that the most special moments in our life are the ones we enjoy the most.
I agree because there is many people that don’t enjoy life as they should and as a result they get an unhappy life.
One of the literary works we’ve read this semester that proves this is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and “Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler. The first one talks about a boy who struggles in school and is alienated by people around him. The other story is about a teenager that is being isolated from his parents and as a result he ran away from school. Both pieces of literature develop the same theme, growing older is confusing and sometimes challenging.

“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Anais Nin

This means that most of the time we don’t interpret life as we should, sometimes we just exagerate things because it’s easy for us.
I agree to this quote because when we’re passing through a hard time it’s hard to see things in the right way.

I think it means that we need to keep going in our life. If you stop going on, your life will not be
meaningful. I agree with it. Because we have to keep going to make our life more successful.
In”The Catcher In the Rye” by J.D.salinger that shows us internal conflict. The main character
named Holden get expelled from the school. His life stopped there and did something that had

1.What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words?
i think it means only we keeping going ,then we can keep balance. we need the brave to trying.
2.Do you agree or disagree and why?
i agree with it because in this modern social ,the world is change fast and frequently..we need to fit the world in order to we can live better ,if we can not fit the world ,we will be out of the world ,and you can not keep up to date any more .you need keeping going to balance you life!
3.What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye.
the main character in the catcher in the rye --Holden ,Holden always feel isolated and depress about the life .Why ?i think the reason is Holden is not keeping his balance and keeping going .Holden live in his own world ,he did not care about other ,he thinks other people who always around is phone ,and nobody listen to him !he has been to separated world ,he stop to trying . so he is isolated in the story.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein

What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words?

It means life has to go on, is like riding a bicycle, if you don’t continue to move it, it will be stop.
Do you agree or disagree and why?

I agree with that because we still growing, the days and nights still changing, and we can’t stop moving.
What literature have we read this semester could prove it?Explain the connection.

The literature “On Turning Ten” by Billy Collins can prove this statement. It said the boy is ten years old now, even though he feel sad about it, but he couldn’t stop it and stay in nine yeas old, that’s impossible. We have to keep moving.

    Quote
“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss

What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words?

It means someone would like to share their feelings with others when they sad, and someone would like to stay alone when they sad.
Do you agree or disagree and why?

I agree with that because everyone have their own condition that they like, someone would like to been alone and someone would to been with others.
What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye.

In “The Catcher in the Rye”, the main character, Holden, he prefer to be sad alone. Because he always think nobody understand him , nobody care him and nobody want to listen to him, so he never told anybody what he really feel, when he was very depressed, he only told Allie, the one who had dead.

This means that in life you have to follow the rules, for example if you want to accomplish your goal you have to keep studying and keep following the rules.
i agree with this because life is not easy and you have to do what the rules say if you want to accomplish your goal.
In the Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden didn’t follow the rules and as a result he got expelled from several schools. he is a boy who feels isolated from the rest of the world, he also feels that no one trust him. this piece of literature develop the theme growing older is confusing and sometimes challenging.

“...there are two types of people in the world: those who prefer to be sad among others, and those who prefer to be sad alone.”― Nicole Krauss, The History of Love
This quote means that in life we are the ones who decide if we want to be happy or sad. this also show us that in life we are the ones who decide if we want to be alone or isolated from the rest of the world.
i agree with this quote because everybody in life have problems and sometimes they have to face bad things and situations.
In Teenage Wasteland by Anne Tyler the main character Donny decided to leave school because he had a lot of problems and also he had a bad relationship with his parents so that’s what made him isolated and that’s why the problem got worst.

i agree with Albert Einstein because during our life we don’t have to fall if we get some problems we have to learn and be stronger and keep moving this quote connect with the catcher in the rye because this history show us the depression from Holden how he felt during his life the principal and good connection is when he move to N.Y to think about his life.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
    * this quote means we have to get experience during our life because with all experience that we get we are creating our self actually in our life problems means one kind of materials to learn about life and this quote means that we have to be originals and Unix. i agree because we sometimes or provably always we think that we have to find our self but we have to decide what we want to be in the future . this connect with the catcher in the rye when Holden sometimes think that he is phone and he stupid as the rest of the guys.

    2. Do you agree or disagree and why?
Ans:I agree with the quote because we would face in many problems and troubles in our life but different people has different ways to solve them.A part of the people will ask for help and they can solve the problems more easily and quickly. That means that we mustn’t stop in the first obstacle we face. Otherwise, we’ll not be able to keep up with the others and then we’ll lose the game.
2)Do you agree or disagree and why? I am totally on board with this proverb because there are many problems in life we’ll need to face at some time and, unless we manage to solve them we will be bound to find ourselves in some dire straits.
3)What literature have we read this semester could prove it? Explain the connection. One must be the Catcher in the Rye. (p.81-82): “The ducks. Do you know , by any chance? I mean does somebody come around in a truck or something and take them away or do they fly away by themselves- go south or something?” This shows that the ducks, despite being left all alone have the aptitude to survive despite all odds(bad weather conditions in winter) because they make an effort. Otherwise, they would have died.
    SECOND PROVERB
1)What does it mean? Paraphrase it in your own words.
“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” That means that everybody has the tendency to judge things in his own point of view, without even considering the fact as it is.

I think this quote means if we want to have a successful life, we should keep going and trying. No giving up,even we face problems in the life. I agree with it because there are many difficulties in our lives, if we give up going forward, we don’t have chance to see the success in the future. But if we keep going and trying, we may get success. The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger and “Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler both prove the quote are true. In The Catcher In The Rye, the main character---Holden gives up the chance to study,he knows if he breaks the rue of school, he must be expelled by school, but he does it.He never try,so he is a loser of the life. In “Teenage Wasteland”,Donny also gives up the chance to tell his parents his thoughts. His parents don’t his thoughts, so they always try to correct Donny in their way. But Donny doesn’t want to tell his minds to his parents. He hides himself. In the end of the story, Donny runs away from family,no one knows his future, but everyone guess that would be bad.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
I think this quote means everyone in the society need to know their personality and develop them, not try to just find and do nothing. I agree with it because I think everybody know themselves, but they don not how to improve the weakness, to be more better. The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger and ”Teenage Wasteland” by Anne Tyler prove the quote is true. In The Catcher In The Rye, Holden does not know himself. He think others all are phony and stupid. But he never thinks about himself. He is isolated and depressed. He get a PTSD after his younger brother died. In “Teenage Wasteland”, Donny just thinks his parents don’t understand him, don’t believe him. But he never thinks he also does not care his parents when he breaks the rule of school.

  62. “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein
    * this quote means during our life we are moving forward , we have many experiences, new things and problems presented during our trajectory of life and although all those thing presented we don’t have fall down we have to keep moving and learn about all those experiences
i agree with Albert Einstein because during our life we don’t have to fall if we get some problems we have to learn and be stronger and keep moving this quote connect with the catcher in the rye because this history show us the depression from Holden how he felt during his life the principal and good connection is when he move to N.Y to think about his life.

From your explanation ,i can gain a conclusion : WE need do the master of life ,don't do slave of life.

  74. Dear Fahameda,
I liked the meaning you said about “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” Albert Einstein. I agree with your opinion but in one place i disagree with you where you said, “ we can’t be influenced by our friends. ” That wrong because good friends can lead you to the good side and bad friends can lead you to the bad way. So you are influenced by your friends or other people anyway.
