  1. Dear Mr. Salinger
Hello, my names is Leticia Cespedes. I’m from Dominican Republic, I’m a junior in newcomers high school. I am 15 years old, I have 3 years seen i left my country and moved here the United States. I am writing to you because I want to express my feelings about your novel The Cather in the Rye, in my ESL class, we just finished your novel.

The book means to me a lot because it express how teenagers sometime act like we know everything, also I like the book because it show my the reality of teenager sometime just don’t know how to express our truth feelings. I really enjoyed how did you use irony in so many parts of the book and how did you use the life of Holden to teach that growing older could be very confusing and challenging sometimes. When I was Reading the novel I made a lot of connections like when Mr.Spencer says to Holden ‘life is a game boy. life is a game that one plays according to the rules.’When I readed this part of the text I started to think about my self and how sometime I don’t do wants right.
Mr. Salinger I have a few questions for you before, what gave you the idea to write a book about teenagers and not adults?, how does the book is connected with your self? and last but not least wha does the book meas to you?.

    Sincerely, Leticia Cespedes

    Dear Mr.Salinger,

We are Krastina Koleva and Albert Valerio. Me, Krastina, I’m from Bulgaria and Albert is from Dominican Republic. Albert is in eleventh grade and me, Krastina, I’m in tenth grade. Albert has been here in the U.S for two years and a half. I have been here for one year and three months. We are seventeen years old. We are writing you this letter because we want to share our expressions about your novel called The Catcher in the Rye ,we have read the book in our ESL class and we just finished it.

We felt like the book was talking to us. It was really interesting the way you represent teenager’s life. It made us feel kind of sad since Holden wasn’t so happy at all. He was always, or just most of the times, stuggling with his personal problems. This novel reminds us of every hard moment we had gone through and all of our supporters that had been helping us by giving us some advices in order to achieve in life. For example, when Holden went to Mr. Spencer’s house. Mr. Spencer didn’t just welcomed Holden, he gave Holden some advices in order to not get stuck in the ruts of life. Mr. Spencer said, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules”. He meant that in life there will be always problems in your life and that you have to avoid them and never give up.

We have some questions about the novel. We would like to know how did you feel when you finished writing that novel. Also, we would like to know if Holden is like a part of you.

Thank you for your time reading my letter and writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,

    Albert Valerio and Krastina Koleva

    Dear Mr.Salinger,
My name is Lin,yun duo.I am sixteen years old. I come from China.I study in NewComer High school.I am in tenth grade now. I have been here about two years.I am writing you this letter because I want to share the expressions about the novel you wrote which is the catcher in the rye, I just finished it in my ESL class.

The book really reflect the situation of most teenagers have. They try to hide their true feeling about the life. The views of life changed a lot as teenagers grow older. The book means a lot for me.I get some advice from this book. When I get to know Holden this character, I feel sad about him.The same situation not only occur on him. In the real life, many teenagers also suffer the pain from the life. The life is more confusing and challenging for them. The book remind me of the time I feel isolated,The depression come from pressure of the life.I feel forlorn that time like Holden felt. The quote from the novel said “Life is a game that one plays according to the rules”I think that is really a good advice for me.If you keep trying, you can succeed someday.

I have a few question about the novel. I like to know what cause you to write this book and what do you feel a teenager like Holden did bad in all these stuff.

Thank you for your time reading my letter and writing the memoir.

    sincerely,

    Dear Mr.Salinger,

Hello,my name is Ye Htet Naing. I am from Myanmar in Southeast Asia. Now I am 18 years old. I have been New York for one year. Now I am in tenth grade. I am writing this letter to you because I want to share my expressions about the novel named The Catcher in the Rye that I have read in my ESL class and I just finished reading it.

I learned a lot of experiences from the novel because it express how teenagers sometimes act. I also like the way that you represent how teenagers behave. It also made me sad because of some reasons, Holden became isolated and felt depressed. I really like the way how you used the irony to express some scenes. While I am reading the novel, I learned the idea that growing older is confusing and sometimes challenging.

Mr.Salinger, I have some questions about the novel after I finished it. I am curious that “Do you have the same experience that Holden suffered in the novel?” And also “Are you expressing yourself in the novel?”

Thank you for your time reading my letter and writing the memoir.

    Dear Mr.Salinger,
My name is Min. I am a17- year old girl who comes from China. I have been in New York for one and half years. I am a 11 grade student in Newcomers High school, of course it’s a public school. In my ESL class, we have read you novel The Catcher in The Rye for almost two marking periods.I really enjoy reading your book in a way.I decide to write a letter to you and tell you what I feel about the book.

Your novel means a lot to me, it expresses many teens’ thoughts in the modern society in a way. We can see many teens also have same problems as Holden has. I really feel sad about Holden when i was reading the novel. Holden was suffering a lot, he has mental diseases and his brother died and he was expelled from Pencey and so many terrible things. I was impressed by Holden had a fight with Straclater, Holden felt extremely depressed and once he had suicide thought and I know that was very dangerous to him.I can see Holden was loney in his deep heart, he wants to have someone to talk to and understand him.

I have some questions through I was reading the novel. I want to know that why you pick up a character like Holden and try to represent a part of yourself during you are a teen. All right, I am wait for you to write a letter to answer my question.

Thank you for taking your time to read a letter from me.

    Dear Mr. Salinger,
My name is jiancheng wu, and I from china. I am 10 grade in newcomers H.S. I have been there for almost 1 year. I write this letter for you because in my ESL class, we just finished your novel, The Catcher in the Rye.
Through read this book, I realize that life is not easy for people to live, on the other hand, life is raspy. I enjoyed that when holden talks to phoebe, I saw a real holden, this make me think that even though life is hard and raspy, there are also some good things in there, such like family, love, and friends. This novel makes me evoke the memory of my childhood. In that time, I was a little bit isolated because I get Chickenpox. So what I need to do was leaving school and stay at home until I was healthy. So I had been stayed at home for 1 month, I only people I saw is doctor and my mother. So this is a time that I feel isolated and feel depressed.
I have some questions for you. Do you think holden is a example that reflect your personal life? Another question is do you have any people that is intimate, just like holden and phoebe?
Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,

    Dear Mr. Salinger,

We are the students of Newcomers High School. I am Huiyu Wu and I am from China. My partner, Nazabat, is from Pakistan. We have been in U.S. for about 2 years and we are juniors of high school. We are writing this letter to you because we just finished reading the book The Catcher in the Rye which written by you. We want to tell you what we feel about your novel and we have several questions to ask you.

Your memoir The Catcher in the Rye meant so much to me. We really enjoyed reading the book because it talk about some common issue about teens. We are in the same age as Holden, sometimes we really feel like that Holden is living with us. We also have some problems like Holden’s, and it makes us to think about that when we read the book. On the page 39, Holden says ,”I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist...” Holden was very sad and depressed when his brother died. We can understand him because we also have that kind of experience which someone in our families left. We also felt sad about that and that effect us and we grow up because of that kind of experience. The book really teach us a lot of things.

I have some questions about the novel to ask you. What’s your purpose of writing the book The Catcher in the Rye? Did you have the same experiences with Holden? How do you come up the ideas of Holden’s experiences? Also, what’s your opinion of Holden?

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

I think this is something that happen in our society, many kids or teenagers are isolated from their families and this book shows us teenagers behavior, when they don’t have someone who supports them, like Holden He never had someone who supports him or teaches him, that’s why he felt depressed and confused, i really like how you use the irony for this scene. When i read it, i made a connection with growing older is challenging.

    Dear Mr. Salinger,

We are Renan and Melly, both 11th graders students from Newcomers High School. We are respectively from Brazil and Cameroon and we’ve been here less than two years. Our teacher assigned your novel,The Catcher in the Rye, in our ESL class. It’s a pleasure for us to be in contact with such a great work of literature and to learn the English language from it.

The Catcher in the Rye is a Great book because it captures exactly what is to be a teenager and, therefore, we feel as if the book was our friend and it was talking to us. when we were reading the book, we felt that great connection between the book and our lives which made us more excited to read more. To tell you the truth, we have never read an interesting book like yours in our lives. As we read the story, we see how hard Holden is struggling. He is a lonely boy and we know it’s pretty common in teenagers. But sometimes we just have to deal with or solve the problem and get out of it.

You know we still couldn’t believe what a surprise ending the story was. The problem is that we were thinking that the ending was going to be something ironical or unforgettable but it was all the contrary. We just wanted to know whether Holden’s problems and how he thinks about the society change in a positive way or it remained the same or they worsened because we know that he doesn’t see people around him as a positive influence on him. Thank you for the time you took to read our letter and for such an unforgettable memoir you made us have by reading your book.

    Sincerely,

Renan Meira and Tsotie Melly Mervine

My name is Lin LiYan and i am from China.I have been The US one -half year. i study in Newcomers High School in 10 grades. In my ESL class, we just finished your novel,”The Catcher in the Rye”.
I like this book very much.because it shows a real live of teenagers. it is talk about Holden suffers from depression, anger, loneliness and grief, and tries to find a place in the world. It makes me understanding although hypocrisy and lies are around us,we still should live for our ideals. sometimes, i feel pity for Holden, because in the novel nobody can understand him and try to understand him ,i really understand how is feeling when nobody can understand you and doesn’t want to listen from you when you need someone listen from you.how lonely he is!! in the novel it said “i felt so lonesome, all of a sudden.i almost wished i was dead.” after he fought with Stradlater and he went to Ackley’s room, he wanted to talk with Ackley ,that time he how hope Ackley can listen from him ,can understand him.but Ackley not. because those he felt so lonely and wanted kill himself. like this circumstances,i also get it,but i am not as critical as Holden was. but i can completely understand his feelings.
May i ask your a question about this book?the one i really want to know is in the book Holden has many relationships with different people, and also talk with them frequently, why he just thinking they are phony why he just thinking they are phony substitute for making a better relationship with them?

    Dear Mr. Salinger,

My name is Dino Koljenovic and my partner’s name is Amanda. I’m from Montenegro and Amanda is from Ecuador. I’m 17 years old and this is my junior year in high school, Amanda is 18 years old and this is her senior year in high school. I’ve been in U.S. one year and a half, on the other hand Amanda has been in U.S. three years. We are writing you this letter in order to tell you our reaction to your great book The Catcher in the Rye. In my ESL (English as a Second Language) class we just finished reading it, we loved it. It’s my first book I’ve read on English since I came to U.S. Amanda has read many other works of literature on either Spanish and English, but as she says this is one of her favorite ones.

I really enjoyed reading your book and so did my partner. When you are a teenager you don’t always feel like reading, especially if you just got to the new country, learned new language and are trying to get some basics of the new culture. Well, since we started reading The Catcher in the Rye we had ability to find ourselves in it and even find connections from our lives. We were able to see that no matter how difficult we think our lives sometimes might have been, there are always some more difficult ones with more complexity in them. Each page of your novel made us think, made us be thankful to what we have and gave us life lesion. Holden became someone well known between me and my partner and we became good friends with him (we got to know him well as a character and think the way he thought). Sometimes we feel similar to the way Holden feels, we see tons of phony friends around us and we try to stay away from them. We sometimes even deal with isolation, pressure from society and many other issues Holden deals with.

Me and my partner would like to ask you what inspired you to write this novel? Are there any connections that world doesn’t know about?

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Dino and Amanda

I like this book, because everything in the book is about our teenagers. We can see the main character named Holden suffered from so many problems. It made me feel sad. In our real life
many teenagers also have these problems, they feel very lonely and nobody understand them.
But in the story.I can felt that Holden love his sister Phoebe and his brother Alie a lot. I saw the true love in the story. When I was in his age.I almost felt like Holden.I did not want to talk to my
mother.I thought that she was noisy. All I did was put everything in my mind. I thought that if I would tell her about something, she would tell me more than 10 times of mine.So I kept everything in my mind. But now I know that was the love and care she gave me.
Mr.Salinger, I want to ask your a personal question. How did you feel during you were writing
the story? I know that something happened in the story was also happened in your real life.

My name is Liwen, and I’m from China. I have been here for almost two years. Now I’m in grade 10 in Newcomers high school. I starting to write this letter to you because in my ESL class, we just finished your novel, “ The Catcher in the Rye”.

Your memoir “The Catcher in the Rye” meant so much to me. The main character, Holden, he’s a teenager as my age, but he experienced much sadness, difficulties, and bad things than me. In the novel, it shows the conflicts between Holden and his family, school, friends, and the world. I learn many things from it. Every time when I read that Holden got into trouble and became depressed and no one helped him, I felt sorry about him, because I have a much happier life, when I was happy, I can shared my feeling with others, when I was unhappy, someone were stay with me. But Holden was not, he’s isolated. In page 13, it said “I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all ice frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them away to a zoo or something. Or the just flew away.”, it shows Holden was really helpless and he really want someone to help him at that time.

I have some questions about the novel, how Holden feels about his past and will he tell Jane that he really loves her?
Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Rutledge Ioannis

    N.Y.,Queens,11372
    12/21/2011
    Dear Mr. Salinger,
My name is Rutledge Ioannis and I am from Greece.I have just come to the United States and I can ensure you I am taking my time in here. I am at tenth grade at a N.Y.C. school, called Newcomers H.S., which undeniably is one of the best. I would just like to inform you that in my ESL class, we have just finished your novel, The Catcher in the Rye.
The reason I am writing to you is because I found your memoir The Catcher in the Rye brilliant.I have never read so great a novel in my entire life! I enjoyed every part of the book because it had the aptitude to keep me in anxiety all time long! Sometimes it made me recall old memories of my childhood , when I was having a bad time defending myself and thus feeling depressed. Memories! They always have the capacity to etch themselves in people’s minds! Anyway, Holden really made me feel pleased whenever I heard him say that he wasn’t in the mood of doing something, due to me remembering doing the same and I am pretty happy to not be experiencing it again. For instance, on page 75 you refer to Holden saying: ‘’ New York’s terrible when somebody laughs on the street very late at night. You can hear it for miles. It makes you feel so lonesome and depressed.’’Or another good quote on page 14: ‘’I didn’t like hearing him saying that. It made me sound dead or something. It was very depressing.’’ I have to admit that this novel really means too much for me.
I would deeply appreciate it whether you could answer some of my questions.First of all, how were you feeling while writing this novel? I acknowledge it might be a difficult question for you to answer, but really does Holden reflect your ideas, beliefs and life or not? I am quite curious about that and I would really like to know.
I would really like to thank you for wasting little of your time for me. Thank you beforehand for your swift reply. I would be grateful if you could answer me.I am looking forward to your reply.Thank you for writing the memoir.
    yours sincerely,
    Rutledge Ioannis Konstantinos

    Dear.Mr.Salinger
My name is Chen.yanxi.I am from China and I have migrated to U.S since i finished middle school.I have been there about 8 months.I am 10 grade in Newcomers High School.I am writing to you because I just finished your novel,The Catcher in the Rye.And I have some expressions and questions about this novel to ask you.
I like this book so much because it shows that common teenagers have many problems in their study and life.It exhibits our confusing feelings and unique views about the world and people. This book reflects we teenagers are being in dangerous edge that can’t extricate ourselves. It inspires me how to adjust myself mentality and solve my problems during dealing with study and relationship between society and myself and the people all over the world to deep consideration how to educate teenagers well.It triggers my different emotion about teenagers. For example, I am pleasure that Holden has the same ideas about the world and people.I am unanimous that the world is filled with many phony and swanky people. As Holden said “People never give your message to anybody” in page 149.This shows growing older would change people and being child never acts phony and self-fish.It shows my true feeling about the growing older.I am unwilling to grow older because I will confront many difficulties and conflict that I can’t control well.Holden referred that “Nobody would be different. The only thing that would be different would be you” in page 121.This shows us growing older is confusing and challenging. However, there are many raspy curses that make me feel bad about Holden because I don’t like saying something bad words behind others that they don’t know.
I also have some qualms to ask you.How do you feel about Holden’s comment about you? Will you be angry about it?Do you think Holden will be better if he accept others’ advice and is changing better little by little ?Why or why not?Do you really care about Holden? What do you think of yourself? Are you also a phony people?

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.
    Sincerely,
    CHEN,YANXI

    Dear Mr. Salinger

My name is Fahameda Hassan. I am from Bangladesh. I’m in 10 grade. Actually I have been here in the USA for 1 and half year. I am writing you this letter because I want to share our expressions about your novel called The Catcher in the Rye because we have read the book in our ESL class and we just finished it. I really enjoyed reading it and it is really a interesting novel where a teenager name Holder were struggling.

Your memoir The Catcher in the Rye meant so much to me.I really enjoyed reading the book because it talk about some common issue about teenagers. I felt very excited while I was reading because it felt like the whole book is talking to me. I learned a lot of things by reading it and it is fully connected to our real life. Sometimes I felt very sorry for Holden and if I were there then, I would try to help him to get rid of his problems. This novel expresses many teens’ thoughts in the modern society in a way. We can see many teens also have same problems as Holden has. I feel very gloomy when i think about it like how can it be possible to live when no one is around you and We always need someone to talk with, to share our happiness and sadness with. I thing I want to mention that I’m in the same age as Holden, sometimes I also feel like that Holden is living with me. I have some problems so Holden does, and it makes me to think about that situation when i was reading the novel. On the page 39, Holden says ,”I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist...” Holden was very sad and depressed when his brother died. I can understand him because I also have that kind of experience and I also lost my family members whom were very important to me. I’m still missing them so much and it effect me in some parts of my life. The book really teach us a lot of things.

I really appreciate that it was such a best novel that I have ever read in my life. Your novel let me know about many things that usually happen to many peoples life and sometimes I also feel same as Holden felt. I have some question for you. My first question is “ Is this a real story of someones life? What is your purpose to show a isolated teenager like Holden? Did have the same experience as Holden does? How did you come up the ideas of Holden’s experiences?

Thank you for your patient and I appreciate that you would take your important time to read my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,

    Fahameda Hassan

I like the letter you wrote to J.D. Salinger. I agree with you. The novel Salinger wrote affects many teenagers' thoughts. As us,we maybe have problems about study stress, puppy love, or relation to others. From the novel, we can see the troubles happened to Holden, And he try to solve it in the end of the novel.

  29. Dear Dino,
I agree with your opinion. Nowadays there are many teenagers are isolated from their families. This novel shows us teenagers behavior, when they don’t have someone who supports them, like Holden. He thinks nobody understand him, but he never thinks he hides himself to others. It teaches us don't be isolated from others.

I like your letter because you show that you really perceive the Holden's feelings. You can connect with yourself to show views about the book.I agree with your idea. It's true that teenagers have many problems and they are digging holes for themselves .However, they still don't know they are in danger. You are right.Life is a game that one plays according to rules.
I believe teenagers can solve these problems with the help with people who care about them and in society.

I agree with your idea about the book of J.D. Salinger. You said that Holden experienced much sadness, difficulties, and bad things than you. I liked your words. I also liked when you said - Every time when you read that Holden got into trouble and became depressed and no one helped him, you felt sorry about him, because you have a much happier life, than him, when you were happy, you shared your feeling with others, when you were unhappy, someone were stay with you. But Holden was alone that's why he couldn’t because he’s isolated. Nice thoughts @Liwen..... :)

My name is Herntz Hogarth Charles, I’m from Haiti, I am a 11 grader from newcomers high school. I’ve been in U.S.A. for almost 2 years. So I’m writing to you to tell you how I feel about your novel,The Catcher in the Rye that we, in our ESL class, just finished reading.

The book means a lot to me because it tells how teenagers sometimes react to what life brings to them, also i liked it because I am a teenager too and i sometimes act like Holden. I also enjoyed the way you used symbolism and irony to make your novel even more interesting. Something Holden and me have in common is the feeling we have for phone people... I mean i can’t stand fake people so does Holden.

One question I wanted to ask you is “what really inspires you to write this successful book?” The answer to this question means a lot to me so please don’t ignore it.

Thank you for your time reading my letter and for writing the memoir.

    Sincerely,
