This week we are going to reread the poem called "On Turning Ten" by poet laureate Billy Collins.
On Turning Ten by Billy Collins
The whole idea of it makes me feel
like I'm coming down with something, something worse than any stomach ache
or the headaches I get from reading in bad light--
a kind of measles of the spirit,
a mumps of the psyche,
a disfiguring chicken pox of the soul.
You tell me it is too early to be looking back,
but that is because you have forgotten
the perfect simplicity of being one
and the beautiful complexity introduced by two.
But I can lie on my bed and remember every digit.
At four I was an Arabian wizard.
I could make myself invisible
by drinking a glass of milk a certain way.
At seven I was a soldier, at nine a prince.
But now I am mostly at the window
watching the late afternoon light.
Back then it never fell so solemnly
against the side of my tree house,
and my bicycle never leaned against the garage
as it does today,
all the dark blue speed drained out of it.
This is the beginning of sadness, I say to myself,
as I walk through the universe in my sneakers.
It is time to say good-bye to my imaginary friends,
time to turn the first big number.
It seems only yesterday I used to believe
there was nothing under my skin but light.
If you cut me I could shine.
But now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,
I skin my knees. I bleed.

1.What is your favorite line in the poem and why?
ReplyDelete“This is the beginning of sadness, I say to myself,” This is my favorite line because I can somehow compare it to my childhood because I didn’t want to grow up and I felt like the world did not matter anymore.
2.What were your favorite things to do when you were ten?
When I was ten I always wanted to play soccer even if I was not so good at it at that time I knew that someday I would get much better...
3.What does the poet feel is the difference between being ten and being younger? Do you agree and why?
I think he feels sad because, he believes that he will now have less time to do the things that he did before even though this is not true. I disagree because there is no big difference turning 10 you are still the same child that you were before, you don’t have responsibilities like adults,10 is an amazing age you feel older than before but not old enough to stop doing what you always wanted to.
4.What do you wish you could still believe or do today that you believed or did when you were younger?
I wish I could still believe that someday I would be a professional soccer player but as the years go by it’s turning into a dream that is very difficult to achieve, even if you are really good at something you can’t always do it.
you have a very good dream a professional player that is good but don't forget to study.

I disagree with what the poet says because when a child turns 10 he/she stills feels the same way.

you start changing, when this change happens we get mature and have responsibilities.

STORY
Now my son is almost turning ten, time flies, I’m forty years old now. I can feel how scared my son is, If I only could tell him that everything will be okay but there is only a way that he can learn and it is by living his life. When he was one I remember how simplicity was for me by the time I was his age. When he was four he also could make himself invisible by drinking a glass of milk. I see my son and I can tell you how innocent I was. Now he is watching through the window I can see the sadness of my son saying goodbye to all his imaginary friends and his favorite toys and the age of five when he was a soldier. I understand his fears and all his dreams because I already passed through them. He’s more afraid of turning ten than of having mumps. His psyche is full of joy and happiness and I am sure his fears will disappear into sidewalks.

The things will become complexity for my future, I need to be responsible for my behaviors. I need to be solemn, my psyche should focus on my future. “11”. that’s a big number. that’s a big, wonderful, surprising, and overwhelming number. when the boy turned 11, his life became a whole different world. he forgot how sad and sick turning ten was for him. turning ten was an illness, it felt like a terrible headache, measles, mumps, and chickenpox. for him, turning ten was like forgetting his childhood. he even felt life was more solemn. now he doesn't believe he is a wizard nor rides his bicycle. he realized no speed could drain out of his bicycle.
after all, he forgot the complexity of life and always focuses on the simplicity of it. he is very happy. he met wonderful friends and every day they play video games after school. for his 11th birthday, his mother bought a playstation 3 for him, something that he always wanted. and his dad threw him a surprise party which was his first birthday party. he is overwhelmed by all his love ones.
Recently,a boy is feeling very sad after he turns 10 years old.It makes him feels like he is having a illness, such as chicken pox, measles,or mumps.Because he doesn’t want to leave his childhood, the beauty of his psyche consists in his simplicity. But now he is getting order, and his world becomes more and more complexity. In the first day of after his10th birthday, his father just began to tell him the standard of being a man;his father was very solemn. However, the boy’s mind was wandering at that time,he was thinking about his innocent stories when he was young. For examples, when he was four he thought he could be a wizard, and when he was nine he was a soldier.
ReplyDeleteToday, the sun is shining brightly. He is walking around the street where he is living on.There,a lot of teens are setting around:some of them are talking about their troubles;some of them are quarreling about something;some of them are smoking...he sees all. Then,he is worrying about himself that the world may disfigures his psyche becomes like them, loses innocent one day.He goes back home until his spirit drains.

Part 2
That emotion only a week for my 11th birthday, I can not believe that yesterday was 10 and now is serving 11 although it means me more responsibilities, it is difficult but as I step once confused but eventually I learned to face my fear problems and other abstaculos that I presented in my way. Now I have learned a little more about life outside a world of toys and fantacias. I'm excited to see but I'm pleased to see my accomplishments and what I could do in this year where I had a lot of fear of failing in my stuff. I think I may never again make a child but what if it is that the child will live forever within me and that never help me stay calm and see what I can get to do.

ReplyDeletePart 2
It’s been few months since I turned ten. Things have been tough for me at first, tough to accept that my childhood days are over. People starts calling me ‘young boy’ as I am not a kid anymore. My mother still thinks I’m paranoid and that I am just over thinking all these things. I know I am supposed to trust her, because she already been through with this, but I guess I’m in the age where I listen to my friends more.
I met a boy while I was in the park sitting down on the bleachers. He is probably around two years older than me. He was like a wizard who cast some spell and figure out what my problem is. I thought he would just laugh at me, but instead he gave me a solemn look. His psyche was different from everyone else that I know. He was still a kid but he acts like an adult. I could see from his eyes that he loves the complexity of his life as a 12-year-old boy. He told me that I should be ready of changes, as it is a part of life. He also added that I should still enjoy my life no matter how old I become and that I shouldn't be draining my mind thinking about growing up. At first, I ignored what he said.
I went home ignoring everything he said. At that same day, I had a dream that disfigured everything I used to believe. I couldn't exactly remember what my dream is. All I remember was that I was in a parallel universe celebrating my 50th birthday all by myself. It was actually a nightmare, not a dream. It was worse than getting measles, mumps, and chicken pox all at the same time, if that is possible. That dream made me realize that the boy was right. I should just be enjoying my life.
It's only few weeks away until I turn 11. Unlike last year, I am now excited for my birthday. We're having a birthday party! I can't to wait to get my gifts, blow my candles, eat my cake, and celebrate my big day. As I get older, I know I will miss the simplicity of life, but at the same time I am also excited and ready to face life.
Now I almost turning 11 years old and I don't feel bad about turning 11 because at the age of 10,i felt like I am more matured than my peers.Even though I had a measles;a mumph of psyche and a disfiguring chicken pox on my body,my childhood was unforgettable moment in my life because we can do anything we like, don't have to face problems and make decisions etc.I also used to feel turning a two digit is a sign of sadness and feel myself as a wizard where I could make myself invisible. At the age of 10,i missed my childhood though it was not yet over which still now I am enjoying and feeling like this is the best day ever in my life.I still want my imaginary friends and the time of innocence back but now I am not a kid anymore that's what my parents tells me.My responsibilities are growing up and I am mostly at the window of my future which make me feel solemnly because in order to become a successful person in the future, you must work hard and face a lot of obstacles in life but it doesn't mean we just only have to focus on our future because childhood memories/flashbacks can never be forgotten till death. Our memories stays in our heart, you don't have to capture a picture.

ReplyDeleteDirections Part I: Answer the questions below, in google docs:
What is your favorite line in the poem and why?
My favorite line in the poem is “It is time to say good-bye to my imaginary friends,
time to turn the first big number.” Line 26-27 and because it remind me when I was 8 years old that always I thought that when I grow up I will be different and leave all my toys from when I was a baby.
What were your favorite things to do when you were ten?
My favorite thing when I were ten was play with my doll name’s “Jali”.
What does the poet feel is the difference between being ten and being younger? Do you agree and why?
Yes, is different be a younger than a ten and I agree because when you being a ten you are a little kid and you don’t have like some responsibility than a menor have and being a ten you just don't think about some problems that menor have.
What do you wish you could still believe or do today that you believed or did when you were younger?
I could believe that I have a good life and have a good job.

ReplyDeleteSTORY:
Oh God! I can’t believe that yesterday I was 10 and now I turn 11 I wish that my future came with a lot of surprise and be a good man. I hope that this new year I can be a better person that I was and I want to be a boy that have the ability to solve my own problems. I could not imagine I was a wizard, and the days of the mumps, pox, measles and any disease that can only get in my childhood, they disfigure my face, everything will not be happen again. All of the memoir I have in my heart and I never going to forget that I was a normal boy that had dreams and I never thought that this dreams just was part of my childhood. Now, I just going to live my life like a normal boy but I never going to forget my toys and my imaginary friends.
Short story
ReplyDeleteThe best birthday of my life ten years ago, when a wizard came to my birthday to enjoy with us. That was amazing because the wizard disfigured a bird in front of i and all the people that i invited to my birthday. I was so happy enjoying my birthday when i saw in my skin a lot of red dot my mom call the doctor and he told my mom the i got a disease call chicken pox. Finally at night i went to my bed because i felt drained.

ReplyDelete1. What is your favorite line in the poem and why?

2. What were your favorite things to do when you were ten?
I used to like to play with my cousin with our barbies and kens. I also liked to watch a lot of cartoons. The last thing is that i liked to be playing with my older sister and cousin all day.
3. What does the poet feel is the difference between being ten and being younger? Do you agree and why?
I think that the difference is that while he is young he can play a lot and have no worries. Also that kids like to play a lot and by the time they grow up they will not have that much time to play how they used to play as i child. I agree because when we are kids all we think about is paying and cartoons no other things and as we grow up things get a little bit harder for us now we are becoming older and getting responsibilities.
4. What do you wish you could still believe or do today that you believed or did when you were younger?
i wish i could play with barbies again but when i have a barbie i just think what a waste of time playing with this.

ReplyDeleteToday it’s my birthday, i’m becoming older, i’m turning ten. This isn’t the best day for me because i don’t want to become older, i would like to stay young forever but i can’t, i want to be free of worries but i can’t. I’m becoming older and that is how it’s supposed to be. I’m having a birthday party which i don’t want to be celebrate because just the idea of turning ten is getting me sick.
I wish i could believe in magic how i used to do, actually i used to say that i was a wizard but now that i’m getting older i’m realizing that things i used to believe in are not true and now i’m just drain of everything. I just don’t want to be an adult i want to stay young. So, it’s the time for the party, must of the guests are already here and i don’t even want to get out of my room, i didn’t this birthday party it was my parents idea, I ask them a million of times not to celebrate my birthday.
It’s been awhile since i came down to the party and I already want it to be over, it is getting me sicker. It’s time to blow the candles and all my friends are excited, I’m happy in the outside but sad in the inside. I think why time goes so fast, my psyche still remembers my childhood as if it was yesterday.

What do you wish you could still believe or do today that you believed or did when you were younger?
1My “This is the beginning of sadness, I say to myself” because sometimes when i memories myself , I want to escapist ,i want stay on this moment , when i turn on the reality i will feel bad with myself.
2 when i was ten my favorite things is my computer, because this was a new toy of my life , we also use Internet , because when i have a holiday , i cant leave to my home , and i stayed in home , therefore, i can just play with computer.
3 The poet feels sad because he is getting older. I disagree because if you want to do something in your childhood , you can do the same things in life now , just a mentality problem, if you try you can do it .
4 i wish i can still trust every things can be possible . because i want to be a positive person . this is me.
